Here’s a drink so refreshing it immediately made it to the top of our summer drink list. try that watermelon water! It’s like a mexican fresh water: Fruit mixed with water and a touch of sweetness. As soon as you take an icy sip, you will be amazed! (At least I was when Alex handed me a frosty glass of this stuff.) The beautiful nuanced sweetness of watermelon, lime juice, and water absolutely turns heads magic. This one is on a loop here.
Ingredients watermelon water
This watermelon water only requires a few ingredients and takes less than 5 minutes to mix. The consistency is thicker than water and a little frothy, adding to the refreshing charm. It’s not infused water because, like strawberry water, it’s difficult to add enough flavor to any fruit other than citrus. It’s more of a cross between an Aqua Fresca watermelon and a watermelon juice: slightly more diluted than the juice and slightly sweet. Here are the ingredients you need to make this delicious drink:
- ripe watermelon
- Sugar
- lime juice
- Ice
All you have to do is shuffle them all together! No effort required.

Adjust the softness as desired
Watermelon water is lightly sweetened to perfection (we think so!). In fact, it’s sweet enough that you can even cut the sugar in half and it still tastes delicious. Here are some notes about the sweetener:
- Use 1 tablespoon sugar, then taste, increasing to 2 if desired. This depends on the ripeness of your watermelon. We liked both variants: They almost taste like different drinks.
- Want a natural sweetener? Try it with maple syrup, honey or agave syrup. There’s no maple flavor to be found in the syrup: it sweetens drinks well (we even use it in cocktails instead of plain syrup).
Use only the ripest watermelon
It goes without saying, but please only prepare this watermelon water when this fruit is in season! Have you ever tasted an unripe melon? (We have.) It’s tart and tasteless: and you definitely don’t want to use it in drinks! Here’s what to look for in store:
- Shop during watermelon season. Out of season we could not find a good melon. It’s just not worth it!
- Look for the plot point. Look for a lighter spot where the watermelon has been resting in the field: this is called a field spot. If the spot on the field is white, it’s not ripe; if the spot is yellow, it is ripe.
