What’s in a Watermelon Mojito?

The watermelon mojito is a twist on the classic mojito, a classic cocktail invented in Havana, Cuba. The modern version of this drink gained traction in the 1930s when writer Ernest Hemingway helped popularize it in America.

How to cut a watermelon

Mash the mint, then the watermelon

This watermelon mojito recipe is so easy, all you have to do is mix mint and fresh watermelon! No more simmering plain syrups on the stove. When grinding, herbs or fruits are gently crushed to release their juices, which helps integrate their flavors into the drink. Here’s what you need to know about jamming:

  • Use a cocktail pestle. It’s the right tool for the job! This is the cocktail muddler we’re going to use. You do not have ? Use an unfinished wooden spoon.
  • First, gently crush the mint. This removes all of the oils from the fresh herb.
  • Next, mash the watermelon until it turns into juice. Above all, you want it to be juicy, but it doesn’t have to be perfect: you’ll get all the pieces out.

Just shake with ice, then strain. Voila: a watermelon mojito!

How to garnish a watermelon mojito

Elevating this drink is all about the toppings! We have some best practices for making a great drink. Here’s what to think about when topping a watermelon mojito:

  • Use clear ice. Clear ice is crystalline ice cubes that you can cut into organic shapes. They make a drink look like it came from a fancy bar! You can do this at home or use a special transparent ice maker.
  • Make small quarters of the watermelon. Watermelon drinks are infinitely sweeter with mini melon wedges! Simply cut your melon into small triangles and add them.
  • Add fresh mint. Sprigs of fresh mint always add a special touch to a drink, so save some for garnish.
