What’s in a Vodka Sunrise?

Vodka Sunrise is a multi-layered cocktail made from vodka, orange juice and grenadine. It’s a twist on the classic Tequila Sunrise, although technically it’s also a screwdriver with grenadine. While the first version of this drink was invented in the 1930s, the modern version originated in a California hotel in the 1970s. The vodka spin came later, as the vodka spin inevitably does with classics. The following is included in a Vodka Sunrise:

  • vodka
  • orange juice
  • grenadine syrup

How to layer Vodka Sunrise

The layers of a Vodka Sunrise are so easy to achieve because they form naturally! Some layered cocktails require the careful flotation of a liquid. But the Sunrise family of drinks is easy because grenadine is denser than orange juice and naturally bottom-floating. Here’s what to do:

  • To mix together: Mix tequila and orange juice with ice in a highball glass.
  • Pay: Pour in the grenadine and it will settle to the bottom.

Store-bought vs. homemade grenadine

Grenadine Syrup is a pomegranate flavored bar syrup used in many popular cocktails and mocktails. Store-bought grenadine is a beautiful bright red color, but often has artificial colors or flavors in it. So another option is homemade! What you should know about grenadine:

  • Try the homemade grenadine. Homemade grenadine syrup tastes amazing! By using pomegranate seeds, you can get a nice bright color, although not as bright as the artificial ones.
  • There are all natural grenadines on the market. But remember that the color will not be that bright. Most natural grenadines are more of a dark mud-red color.
  • Or try the artificially colored one! If you can handle the red dyes and only use them occasionally, this is a decent option and gives the best vibrant color.
