Looking for a version of the classic twist? try that vodka tendril! This sophisticated retro cocktail has a sparkling, refreshing taste and a chic vibe. Why roll with vodka when it’s traditionally done with gin? It has a milder taste. While we love the botanical notes that gin brings to the table, the vodka vine is a fun twist. That’s how it’s done!

What is a vodka gimlet?

A vodka spin is a twist on the classic spin, which usually involves the use of gin. The Gimlet is a classic cocktail made with 2 parts gin and 1 part lime juice. Sometimes it is served with some sparkling water. For the vodka version, simply swap out the gin. Here’s what’s in a twist vodka:

origin of the spin

The tendril became popular in the 1950s, so it’s a classic retro cocktail! His first appearance was actually in a 1928 cocktail book, so he goes back at least that far. If you’re like me, you might be interested in the origin of the name (so many fun cocktail names! Tom Collins, Greyhound, Salty Dog, Hanky Panky…). The two theories are: A surgeon named Sir Thomas Gimlette began serving it to sailors to prevent scurvy, or a tool called the Gimlet, which was used to punch holes in naval ships (named for the drink’s “penetrating effect”).

How to make a vodka spin

How does a vodka tendril taste? It’s zesty and balanced, with a smoother flavor than a gin gimlet (which is more botanical and forward-thinking). Here are the basic steps to making a vodka vine (see full recipe quantities below):

  • Shake: Pour vodka, lime juice and syrup into a shaker and shake with ice.
  • stump: Pour into a glass. Garnish with a slice or slice of lime.

What kind of glass to use?

A tendril is traditionally served in a cocktail glass, which is a stemmed glass with a small rounded top. You can also serve it in a martini glass, which is similar but more of a cone shape. If you want it to look perfectly classy, use one of these glasses or whatever stemmed glass you have on hand. Of course, you can serve it in any glass you like: even a lowball glass will do!

Other types of tendrils

There are several ways to make a vine! Here are our favorite ways:

  • Gin Gimlette The classic! It is a brilliant and botanical gin.
  • French tendril Elderflower liqueur with a difference! Three ingredients (St. Germain, lime and gin) come together for a refreshing and chic cocktail.
  • basil screwdriver A gin twist with fresh basil! This version contains lime juice, gin and crushed basil, giving it a fresh and peppery essence.

The classic Gin Gimlette is a crowd favorite.

Use plain syrup or maple syrup

Want to make a naturally sweet cocktail? The sweetener we love to use most in our cocktails isn’t actually the traditional plain syrup: it’s maple syrup! Why? Maple syrup more gently sweetens the drink and adds a subtle undertone to the flavor. Whenever Alex and I try both, we prefer maple. Plain syrup has a cleaner and clearer taste: you can use it here to be even more classic.

Use the best quality vodka

Because the vodka vine is so easy to make with just 3 ingredients, it’s important to use the best quality vodka here! The rule of thumb we like to use when choosing your vodka is to just buy mid-range vodka. Price is generally a rough indicator of quality for most spirits. Here we used Tito’s vodka. Bonus points if you can find locally distilled vodka!
