Ingredients of this virgin mojito recipe

The Classic Mojito is a rum, mint and lime cocktail that was invented in Havana, Cuba and remains one of the most popular classic cocktails to date. The origins of the mojito are nebulous: some say it was invented in the 15th century, others claim it was in the 18th century with the birth of the Bacardi rum company. But its place as an iconic Cuban cocktail was cemented in the 1930s when Ernest Hemingway helped popularize the drink.

This virgin mojito recipe is a twist on the classic, sans the rum! But it contains another interesting ingredient that makes it even tastier:

What is orgeat syrup? Why add it to a mojito mocktail?

As Alex and I were tinkering with this blank mojito recipe, I found a bottle of orgeat syrup in our fridge that we’d previously made a mai tai out of. Could the flavor nuance of this particular cocktail syrup mimic the taste of rum? No wonder: the citrus and almond flavor of the orgeat was just what this mocktail needed. It’s not a must, of course, but it’s fun and makes this drink taste even better better. What exactly is organization?

  • oregano syrup is an alcohol-free almond syrup for sweetening cocktails. It has a distinctive nutty flavor with hints of citrus that are difficult to replicate. It’s easy to find Orgeat at your local liquor store or online.
  • How is orgeat pronounced? Say Or-ZHAAT in your best French accent, with the “ZH” being like the J in Jacques’ name.
  • What other cocktails use it? Use it to make a classic mai tai: it makes the drink!
  • How much does orgeat syrup cost? You can buy a bottle for around $10. It’s easy to find online: here’s the orgeat syrup we have.

Don’t want to buy an Orgeat? No problem: just use simple syrup! It’s easy to make at home and perfect for cocktails and mocktails of all kinds. Want even more mint in your mocktail? Try our simple mint syrup.

The correct way to chop mint

The only other thing to note about a virgin mojito recipe: how to muddle! confuse with consists of gently crushing herbs or fruits to release their juice. As a result, the flavors integrate better into the drinks. Is there a good way to get confused? Indeed they exist! Here’s how to muddle mint…right:

  • Place the mint leaves in the bottom of a shaker. If you don’t have one, you can use a large metal mug or bowl.
  • With a wooden cocktail pestle or an unfinished wooden spoon, soft Mash the mint several times to release the juice. Don’t crush the mint very hard! The key to confusion is a light touch.

Variants: Mash raspberries with mint for a raspberry mojito, or strawberries for a strawberry mojito, or slice peach for a peach mojito. Or try an 8-serving Mojito pitcher!

Sparkling Water vs. Tonic Water: Use Both in This Blank Mojito Recipe!

Some drinks use primarily carbonated water, also known as sparkling water or seltzer water. The Rickey family of cocktails uses only carbonated water, such as Lime Rickey, Cherry Lime Rickey, and Raspberry Lime Rickey. But others ask for tonic water. Guess what: you can use both in this blank mojito recipe! What is the difference?

  • Carbonated water, also known as sparkling water or seltzer water, is carbonated water without additives. We use our SodaStream to make carbonated water for drinks and just for drinking.
  • tonic water is carbonated water with added quinine and sugar. This gives this drink a noticeably different taste as it is smoother and has a bitter finish. But we love it because it adds intrigue and nuance to the taste: especially important for mocktails, as they contain no alcohol and can end up tasting like glorified juice.
