Oat milk and more non-dairy milk

Is oat milk necessary for dairy-free hot chocolate? What other plant-based dairy products are good? What you should know about vegan milk:

  • Oat milk is the ideal non-dairy milk. The texture is just right for a hot chocolate: it gets a little runnier than our classic hot chocolate, but not by much.
  • Other options? cashew milk or soy milk. We find that these milks have a more pleasant creamy texture than other milks.
  • Avoid almond milk or coconut milk. Most brands of almond milk are too watery with a strong nutty flavor. Coconut milk is usually too rich with a strong coconut flavor.

Dark chocolate is typically vegan

The element that tops this vegan hot chocolate? real chocolate! Real chocolate gives this hot drink just the right amount of richness. Here’s what you need to know about choosing vegan chocolate:

  • Dark chocolate is generally vegan as it is made with cocoa butter and chocolate liquor. Milk chocolate and white chocolate are usually made with dairy products, making them off-limits on vegan and dairy-free diets.
  • Vegan chocolate and dairy free chocolate are one thing, but this hot chocolate tastes so much better with the rich, bitter taste of dark chocolate.

How to make vegan and dairy-free hot chocolate: some tips!

Once you have the right ingredients, this vegan hot chocolate recipe only takes 5 minutes to make! All you have to do is heat all the ingredients and melt them in the chocolate! Here’s what you need to know about the process:

  • First, whisk some milk with the cocoa powder. This will help make a paste and dissolve most of the powder, which can get clumpy.
  • You can omit the chocolate if you like, but it adds richness, body, and depth to the flavor. Using only cocoa powder gives it a finer texture and taste closer to the hot cocoa mixture.
