What’s in a vanilla latte?

A vanilla latte is a coffee drink made from espresso, frothed milk and vanilla syrup. Vanilla syrup is super easy to make at home: all you need is a few minutes, sugar, and vanilla extract. Here are the ingredients you need to make this drink:

How to Make a Vanilla Latte: Basic Steps

This vanilla latte recipe is almost the same as a basic café latte: the only difference is that you add vanilla syrup when you boil or froth the milk. Otherwise it’s the same basic concept. The hardest parts are finding a great espresso method and a steam or foam method. Here’s what to do:

  • Step 1: Prepare a double espresso (see methods below).
  • Step 2: Steam or froth the milk with the vanilla syrup (see methods below).
  • Step 3: Pour the frothed vanilla milk into the espresso.

Make espresso at home

Before you make a latte, you need a great method for making homemade espresso. You don’t need a tabletop espresso machine, but it’s nice because it produces the highest quality espresso. Here are the methods we recommend:

Steaming vs. frothing milk

The other thing you need for this vanilla latte recipe? Steamed or frothed milk! If you have an espresso machine, you can steam it, otherwise you’ll need to use one of the following frothing methods. For the best vanilla latte, use whole milk: it has the richest flavor and foam. If desired, you can use oat milk for a vegan latte; It is the best plant-based milk for frothing. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Steam milk (espresso machine): If you have an espresso machine, this is the way to go! It’s a bit technical, but the result is a rich, creamy micro mousse. Go to How to steam milk.
  • Froth milk (without machine): There are several ways to froth milk. The best method is a hand frother, but you can also use a French press or whisk. Go to How to froth milk.

Variant: Iced Vanilla Latte

A popular variant of this drink? The Vanilla Iced Latte! This drink is even easier since you don’t have to steam or froth the milk. We like to shake it up a bit in a ball glass to get it foamy before adding it to the espresso and vanilla syrup. It’s super delicious: go for this Iced Vanilla Latte recipe.

  • 2 espresso (2 ounces)
  • 4 oz (½ cup) fresh whole milk or oat milk* (double boiled for two servings)
  • ½ tbsp vanilla syrup

  1. If you haven’t already, prepare the vanilla syrup.
  2. Prepare espresso: Prepare the espresso with an espresso machine, a manual espresso machine, a French press or a moka pot. See Making Espresso for instructions.
  3. Steam or froth milk and vanilla syrup (double batch): Pour the vanilla syrup into the milk. Steam the milk with an espresso machine, or heat and froth the milk using the method of your choice (milk frother, French press, whisk, or saucepan with a lid). It’s easiest to steam or froth 1 cup of milk for 2 drinks, so use 1 tablespoon of vanilla syrup. See How to steam milk or How to froth milk for more information.
  4. Surcharge: Pour the milk into the middle of the espresso and finish with a light froth (use half of the steamed or frothed milk for 1 glass).

Remarks

*Whole milk works best; Milk that is a few weeks old may not foam. You can also use oat milk for a vegan latte.
