Turn a baguette into crispy toasted baguette slices! They are perfect as a topping for crostini or as a cracker with hummus and dips.

Grilled baguette

Here’s a tip for the tastiest crostini or crackers: prepare them toasted baguette slices! These crispy little fries are at home on a happy hour platter, perfect for serving as a cheese platter or dipping in artichoke and spinach dip. Many store-bought crackers can taste bland or like they’re full of additives and preservatives: why not make your own homemade version? Alex and I have been making them as entertaining appetizers for years and finally decided to write down the recipe. Here’s how to make it and your favorite way to serve it.

The wand to use

Of course you have to start with a baguette! Look for the best French baguette you can find at your local grocery store. But there is a little wiggle room with this one. Since you’re toasting the bread until it’s crispy, the quality doesn’t matter as much as if you were using it untoasted. You can also make your own wand at home (see below). But any commercial wand will do!

How to make a toasted baguette

Toasting a baguette is so easy, it’s important to remember these steps. Once you use this method, memorize it and you can do it while you sleep. Or mark it to remember the temperature and time.

  • preheat the oven 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Slice the baguette diagonally. Place the slices in a single layer on a baking sheet. No oil needed, no parchment paper: nothing!
  • Cook for about 10 minutes (The timing depends on the age of the baguette and the thickness of the slices). That’s it!

What is bevel cut?

We told you to cut the baguette at an angle: what does that mean? Bias simply means diagonal! Now you don’t have to cut diagonally: you can easily slice this recipe directly. But cutting at an angle will result in larger pieces! Especially with small baguettes, it’s nice to get a nice oval shape for the pieces.

Goat cheese crostini
Spread the grilled baguette with goat cheese and garnish with honey and mint. The perfect appetizer!
