(OK, that’s one thing, and that’s a good thing, too. Point taken.) It wasn’t until I took the first sip that I was convinced. It’s tangy, lemony and Then smooth without the traditional bite of the tequila finish. Yes, it’s worth it! Even if you’re a tequila fan, which we are.

What is a vodka margarita?

The vodka margarita is a twist on the classic cocktail using vodka instead of tequila. It’s part of a long history of alcohol exchanges, like vodka martini or the endless variations of Moscow mules. As you probably know, the margarita is one of the most popular cocktails of all time, having been invented in Mexico in the 1930’s. The classic method of preparation has only three ingredients: tequila, lime and triple sec. Here you swap vodka for tequila, then add orange juice to add some complexity to the flavor. The ingredients you need are:

  • vodka
  • Triple sec or Cointreau
  • lime juice
  • orange juice

Savvy mixologists will note that the vodka margarita looks a lot like a suicide bomber: it’s made of vodka, triple sec and lime. But of course you want that classic salt crust for the margarita.

Best to use triple sec

Let’s face it: you can use any quality vodka you want here. Because vodka has such a neutral taste, it is mostly dominated by the citrus flavors of this drink (on purpose!). But how about orange liqueur? Here’s the best triple sec for margaritas:

  • triple sec Yes, Triple Sec is a family of orange liqueurs and a product in its own right! It has an honest orange flavor. Are you looking for a quality brand: we love Drillauds.
  • Cointreau. Cointreau is usually our standard margarita. It has a refined flavor with warm spices and undertones of oak and vanilla. It’s really great in a vodka margarita because it adds a bit more glamor. Don’t hesitate to choose one or the other!

The salt rim is needed for a vodka margarita

Because it’s not a vodka margarita Really a margarita, the salty rim is essential to making a margarita. It’s not optional! Here are some tips on how to make a salt rim:

  1. Use kosher salt or sea salt flakes (not table salt!). These types of salt are coarse and give the right texture around the edge. Or you can make celebratory margarita salt to intensify it.
  2. Take a wedge of lime and cut a notch in the middle. Then slide it around the edge of the glass. This will wet the rim without having to use your fingers.
  3. Edge only the outer edge. Spread the salt in an even layer on a plate. Tilt the glass in the salt so that it rests against the outer rim. Shake out loose salt in the sink.
