Here’s a creamy side dish that’s perfect for any plate: mashed sweet potatoes! This deliciously creamy porridge is light and sweet: perfect for serving with a hearty protein like roast chicken or pan-fried fish. How to make mashed sweet potatoes

Mashed sweet potatoes are similar to mashed potatoes but processed in a food processor until light and fluffy. This gives it a creamy texture that gives it a higher flavor than a plain mash. We tried them back to back and it wasn’t a contest: the mashed sweet potatoes was the big winner! Here’s the basic method (or jump straight to the recipe):

  • Steam the sweet potatoes. The quickest way to cook sweet potatoes for this mash? Steam them! If you have a large vaping basket, it only takes 30 minutes. Go to Steamed Sweet Potatoes.
  • Or roast the sweet potatoes. You can also roast the potatoes. Using our sweet potato quick cooking method makes it quick and easy: much faster than the traditional whole cooking method.
  • take the meat. Use a spoon or fork to scoop out the flesh of the sweet potato.
  • Mashed potatoes! Place in a food processor and puree with butter, salt, and additional seasonings (see below!) for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

The sweet potato mash tastes amazing just the way it is! In fact, you can make this mashed sweet potato as baby food and without any seasonings except salt. But to spice it up for a special dinner, we recommend the following flavors:

  • parmesan cheese: Add ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese for optimal savory flavor
  • Garlic Powder and Cumin: Just a shot of each (⅛ teaspoon) really enhances the flavor
  • Dried Sage: ⅛ to ¼ teaspoon dried sage brings a rich fall flavor
  • Dried Thyme: The thyme also adds a rich flavor; Add about ¼ teaspoon dried or 1 teaspoon freshly chopped

Vegan variant

Want to make dairy-free or vegan mashed sweet potatoes? Don’t worry: Parmesan cheese or butter aren’t necessary. Here’s what to do:

  • Substitute butter for vegan butter or refined coconut oil
  • Leave out the parmesan
  • Add a little more salt or even a few teaspoons of nutritional yeast for an extra savory flavor, depending on your taste

  • 3 large sweet potatoes (approx 2 1/2 Pound Sterling)
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • Optional: ⅛ garlic and cumin powder or ⅛ teaspoon dried sage

  1. Steam sweet potatoes (30 minutes) or roast sweet potatoes (40 minutes).
  2. Carefully cut the sweet potatoes in half as they will be hot. Scoop out the flesh of the sweet potato with a spoon or fork and place in the bowl of a food processor.
  3. Add the butter and salt (and additional spices if desired; if you’re pureeing baby food, you can skip this step). Blend until light and creamy, 30 seconds to 1 minute. Consume immediately, refrigerate for 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
