Sugar free BBQ sauce

So many store-bought sauces these days are loaded with added sugar…so why not make them at home instead? At least that’s what Alex and I said. If we can make homemade sourdough bread and whipped cream, we can definitely make homemade barbecue sauce! Fortunately, this theory was correct. Today we unveil this sugar-free BBQ sauce that contains no refined sugars: just tomatoes, vinegar and spices. And it’s so flavorful and aromatic, you won’t even notice the difference. Read on for the recipe!

What is Sugar Free BBQ Sauce?

What does sugar-free barbecue sauce actually mean? It’s a vinegar BBQ sauce: it’s flavorful and tomato-based, with no refined sugar. Many barbecue sauce recipes use ketchup, which contains sugar, and then add more sugar to the sauce as it simmers. While this adds great texture and an addictive sweetness to the barbecue sauce, it really isn’t necessary! This sugar-free BBQ sauce is so flavorful and delicious that you don’t have to miss out on anything!

When Alex first served it to me I was floored! It was so delicious, I almost like it better than our classic homemade lightly sweetened maple bbq sauce – which is also very, very good.

Note that there is a small amount of natural sugar in the tomato sauce and paste in this recipe. However, because it is a natural sugar and only trace amounts are present, it falls into our sugar-free category.

How to make barbecue sauce without sugar

This Sugar Free BBQ Sauce is really easy to make and only takes 10 minutes! (Although our Mustard BBQ Sauce only takes 5 minutes…check out this link if you’re curious!) Here are the ingredients you’ll need to make it:

  • Canned tomato sauce (it’s not spaghetti sauce or marinara, it’s a cooked puree of unseasoned tomatoes – look for it in the tomato aisle)
  • tomato paste
  • The vinegar: Apple and white cider
  • smoked paprika
  • Hot sauce
  • soy pasture
  • Old Bay Spice

Place all ingredients in a saucepan and heat over low heat until thickened, about 10 minutes. That’s it! The BBQ sauce keeps in the fridge for about 1 month. When you find it takes so long!

How do you serve it?

You can use this mustard bbq sauce the same way you would use a tomato bbq sauce! Here are some ways we recommend:
