Here’s one way to cook everyone’s favorite root vegetables that might surprise you: Steamed Sweet Potatoes! This simple method is quick and easy and results in the most deliciously moist and tender meat. Don’t get me wrong: we love the oven for veggies, like these baked sweet potatoes. But steaming these orange veggies makes them so moist, it might just become your new best method.

Best Potatoes for Steamed Sweet Potatoes

You can steam any type of sweet potato, but what matters is the size. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Look for medium-sized sweet potatoes. Try to find potatoes that are about 8 ounces each and medium-sized. You can also steam small potatoes. Large potatoes also work, but they take longer.
  • This recipe is suitable for orange-fleshed potatoes. You can use white-fleshed sweet potatoes in this recipe, but we haven’t tested them! The two main types of orange-fleshed potatoes you’ll find at the store are jewelwho has light brown-orange skin and garnet red, who has red skin and is slightly thinner. We tested this recipe with Jewel Sweet Potatoes.

We always thought the best way to prepare a potato was with a baked sweet potato. But turns out steaming is just as delicious! It makes the veggies incredibly tender, perfect as a simple side dish or as a main course with toppings. (We’ll get to that later!)

Steamed sweet potatoes are also faster than boiled ones: it takes about 1 hour to cook a whole sweet potato, while steaming takes about 30 minutes total. How long to steam sweet potatoes:

  • Put water in a pot directly under the steamer basket and bring to a boil.
  • Add the steamer basket with the whole sweet potatoes. Simmer for 25 to 35 minutes, depending on the size of the potatoes, and steam until tender when pierced with a fork. Let stand 5 minutes, then cut in half and add toppings.

Steaming sweet potatoes yields the best moist orange flesh, perfect for garnishing or stuffing! This recipe is very versatile: you can garnish them as a side dish or fill them as a main dish. Here are a few ways we like to top sweet potatoes:

  • 2 Pound medium sweet potatoes (approx 4 medium potatoes)

  1. In a saucepan*, add water to a level just below the steamer basket (about 1 inch of water). Boil the water.
  2. Add steamer drizzled with whole sweet potatoes. Simmer for 25 to 35 minutes, depending on the size of the potatoes, and steam until tender when pierced with a fork. Let stand 5 minutes, then cut in half and top with your favorite toppings (see Stuffed Sweet Potatoes).
