Here’s a nice side dish that’s simple and full of flavor: Garlic butter stewed potatoes! This recipe is ideal for new potatoes or baby potatoes, those pretty little potatoes with a rich and buttery texture. Better yet, use potato mix for a golden, bright red, and rich purple color variation. Toss them with butter, garlic, and parsley, and you have a quick side dish that everyone will go crazy for. (We have done!)

How to steam potatoes

Everything you need to prepare steamed potatoes? A steamer basket and a large pot! Steam baskets come in different sizes. Ours is big enough to hold 1½ pounds of potatoes. For this recipe, you can stack the potatoes on top of each other. This is how long potatoes need to be steamed (or go to the recipe below for more details):

  1. Boil water: In a large saucepan, add 1 inch of water and a large pinch of salt. Place the steamer basket in the saucepan and bring the water to a boil.
  2. Add the potatoes and steam: Once boiling, reduce the heat slightly, add the potatoes and cover the pan. Steam the potatoes for 10 to 15 minutes, until tender when pierced with a fork.
  3. Season: Place the hot steamed potatoes in a bowl and toss with the butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, kosher salt, and freshly ground pepper. See recipe below for quantities!

Ways to flavor steamed potatoes

In our opinion, the best way to flavor steamed potatoes is to keep it simple! For this recipe, we tossed steamed potatoes with butter, garlic, and parsley in a classic flavor combination. Here are some things to keep in mind and some other ideas for flavoring those potatoes:

  • Butter and Parsley: The most necessary! Also, be sure to salt the potatoes well.
  • Garlic: It’s optional: it brings out flavor since the garlic is added after steaming. Only for garlic lovers!
  • Old Bay: Classic New England Old Bay Spice is perfect for potatoes!
  • Fresh herbs: Try 1 tablespoon finely chopped rosemary, thyme, or sage (or a combination of the three) instead
  • Chives: Or try chopped chives!
  • Parmesan cheese: Everything gets better with some grated or grated parmesan
