Spicy Brussels sprouts

Do you like heat in your food? So let us introduce you to your new favorite. Meet these spicy Brussels sprouts! They are incredibly crunchy and roasted in a hot oven until tender and golden. Then they’re tossed with a balsamic honey sauce and drizzled with a little more hot sauce for good measure. Bite into it and it’s crunchy, tender, sweet, tangy, salty and hot all at the same time! Alex and I can polish an entire pan in one sitting. (Truth.) Here are all the secrets behind those flavorful sprouts.

Key to the Best Spicy Brussels Sprouts

These flavorful Brussels sprouts use our favorite technique for cooking crispy Brussels sprouts. Luckily, you don’t need a deep fryer or special tools: just your oven! Here’s what we do to make them perfectly crispy and with just the right amount of seasoning:

  • Roast at 450F for 25 minutes. The key to crispy Brussels sprouts is high heat! Cut them in half and place them face down on the baking sheet so they are perfectly golden brown.
  • Toss with the flavorful honey balsamic sauce. The key to these flavorful sprouts are two spicy hits: the first is in that tangy honey-balsamic sauce that coats them all.
  • Drizzle with more hot sauce to taste! Then, for the right amount of heat, drizzle on some more hot sauce! Since the spiciness of all sauces is different, you can prepare them to your liking. Speaking of…

Kinds of hot sauces to use!

This spicy Brussels sprouts can be made with any type of hot sauce you like! Each variety has a different level of spiciness and flavor. We like to make this with Frank’s Red Hot Sauce, but there are many other options that bring different flavors and levels of spice. Here are some popular hot sauces that we always have in our fridge and how hot they are:

  • Frank’s Red Hot: Slightly spicy
  • Tabasco: Slightly spicy
  • Sriracha: Medium sharp, adds a Southeast Asian vibe
  • Gochuyang: Medium spicy, adds a Korean vibe
  • School: Spicy, adds a Mexican vibe
  • Harisa: Spicy, adds a Mediterranean vibe

Use parchment paper for easy cleaning (no silicone mat)

When preparing spicy Brussels sprouts, the easiest way is to use parchment paper to line the baking sheet. Why? This makes cleaning up after roasting easier! If you don’t have parchment paper, you can also skip it and fry right on the pan: just be prepared to get some elbow grease afterwards!

Never use a silicone baking mat! Over the years, Alex and I have found that these types of mats result in mushy veggies. If you want flavorful, crunchy Brussels sprouts, avoid this type of baking mat!

Other ways to flavor spicy Brussels sprouts

These flavorful Brussels sprouts are perfect as a side dish or as a delicious pre-meal appetizer! The foods they go with depend on the hot sauce you use! You can also mix and match different ingredients to suit the mood you’re going for. Here are a few ideas:

  • Asian Flavors: Try adding some soy sauce, hoisin sauce, or toasted sesame oil (you might want to reduce the salt in the recipe if you plan on using soy sauce). Replace the balsamic vinegar with rice wine vinegar.
  • Mexican Flavors: Substitute lime juice for balsamic vinegar and use cholula. Or use a little adobo sauce from a can of chipotle peppers for the hot sauce.
  • Mediterranean-style flavors: Use harissa and garnish with crumbled feta cheese.
