What to look out for when buying shrimp?

Is there a preference between fresh and frozen shrimp? How about buying sustainable fish? Here’s what you need to know when buying shrimp from the grocery store:

  • Fresh vs frozen. One myth about fish is that “fresh fish is best,” but frozen fish isn’t necessarily inferior in quality. In fact, it could be higher! If a fish is frozen when you catch it and stays frozen until it reaches you, it’s of better quality than a raw fish that takes a week to get to your basket.
  • Search for Wild or Caught in the USA. Wild fishing is generally a sustainable choice if you can find it. If you live in the United States, look after us taken. Imported seafood is at risk of being overfished, caught under unfair labor conditions, or farmed in environmentally harmful ways.
  • Seek hook and line as an example of a type of sustainable fishing gear. Bottom trawling is considered to be the most destructive and least sustainable method.
