When cooking, did you realize you ran out of vinegar? Here are the best sherry vinegar substitutes to use in recipes.

Preparing a recipe that calls for Sherry Vinegar and you don’t have one? Sherry vinegar is a Spanish vinegar made from the fermentation of sherry wine, then filtered and bottled. It has a round taste with less acidity than red or white wine vinegar and subtle notes of caramel. This makes it a fantastic all-purpose vinegar for salad dressings, marinades and more. Don’t have time to shop it? Here are some replacement ideas.

Best Sherry Vinegar Substitute

1. Rice vinegar (unseasoned)

The Best Substitute for Sherry Vinegar? rice vinegar! This type of vinegar is made from fermented rice and is used in Asian cooking. Although not Spanish, the rounder, subtly sweeter flavor is closer to sherry vinegar than traditional white and red vinegar. A word of advice: make sure you don’t use seasoned rice vinegar! It is seasoned with sugar and salt and used to flavor sushi rice and Asian salads.

2. Champagne vinegar

If you have it, champagne vinegar might work as a substitute too! It comes from the fermentation of champagne. It has a very mild taste, so it doesn’t come close to the intensity of sherry vinegar.

3. Red wine or white wine vinegar

Another substitute for sherry vinegar? Red wine or white wine vinegar! Note, however, that these two are much stronger than sherry vinegar. White wine vinegar is a slightly better substitute than red wine, which is the strongest and most acidic. Use both as a 1:1 substitute.

4. Lemon Juice (in a pinch)

Don’t have vinegar on hand? In a pinch, you can use lemon juice as a substitute. Lemon juice is also acidic and tart like sherry vinegar. Of course it tastes like lemon and not like vinegar! Lemon juice can work for salad dressings, but you may need to add a little more lemon juice to match the sherry vinegar’s tartness (make it to taste).
