Ingredients in a RumChata White Russian

The RumChata White Russian is a twist on the classic drink with cream liqueur instead of cream. A Classic White Russian is a vodka, cream, and coffee liqueur cocktail that dates back to the 1950s. It’s actually a variation of Encore another one Classic cocktail, the Black Russian, made only with vodka and kahlua. However, both drinks have a long history and are still very popular today.

What do you need for a RumChata White Russian recipe? Just replace cream with RumChata! It adds hints of cinnamon and vanilla to the coffee notes of the Kahlua. This is what you need for a RumChata White Russian:

  • vodka
  • Coffee Liqueur (Kahlua or others)
  • RumChata

How sweet is this drink?

RumChata and Kahlua are very sweet liqueurs. It therefore goes without saying that the RumChata is White Russian very sweet. In fact, it’s almost a little too sweet for our liking. So here’s what we did to reduce the sweetness a bit:

  • The Kahlua is reduced compared to a classic White Russian. Adding just ½ ounce of Kahlua will tone down the sweetness.
  • You can also reduce the RumChata a bit. Because it’s sweet, RumChata with cream yields a much sweeter flavor than standard White Russian.

Learn more about Rumchata

Perhaps, like us, you acquired a bottle of RumChata to make a Cinnamon Toast Crunch Shot? It’s hard to know what to do with this sweet liquor once you have it. Here’s a little more about it:

  • RumChata is a cream liqueur made in Wisconsin with Caribbean rum, cream, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla. It’s similar to Baileys Irish Cream, but Baileys is made in Ireland with Irish whiskey. RumChata tastes sweet and creamy, with hints of cinnamon and dark rum on the finish.
  • RumChata was launched in 2009 and was inspired by the Mexican and Spanish drink Horchata, a creamy drink made from soaked rice or almonds and cinnamon that resembles milk. The difference? Rumchata has real dairy… and rum! Despite the name on the bottle, it doesn’t actually contain horchata (read more here).
  • How much does RumChata cost? A large 750ml bottle costs around $20.
  • What else can you do with it? Try a Cinnamon Toast Crunch or a RumChata coffee.

How to make a RumChata White Russian

Nothing easier than the RumChata White Russian: you can build the whole drink in the glass! Here’s how:

  • Combine vodka and Kahlua in a glass, then pour in the RumChata.
  • Stir gently to create the swirl effect. If you immediately stir the drink, it will turn beige. It’s more fun to get the swirl effect! Stir gently a few times, and the cream swirls through the vodka and Kahlua in a beautiful pattern.
  • To intensify: use clear ice! Clear ice cream is homemade ice cream that is crystal clear instead of cloudy like regular ice cream. Cut it into large organic shapes and it looks like something you would find in an upscale bar! It’s very easy: It only takes 24 hours and a small cool box. Go to How to make transparent ice.
