rum and tonic

Got rum and need a quick and easy cocktail? try it rum and tonic! This twist on the classic G&T is bubbly and refreshing, with a hint of fruity rum on the finish. It’s almost like a subtle version of Dark and Stormy, less spicy sweetness and more intriguing undertones. Either way, it’s a deliciously simple rum drink that’s perfect for sipping anytime. Although we prefer a G&T or a Vodka Tonic, the Tonic Rum is definitely worth a try!

What is a rum tonic?

Rum and Tonic is a variant of Gin and Tonic that mixes rum with tonic water. You can use any type of rum in this one! It’s a highball cocktail, a family of drinks that combine alcohol with a larger serving of a non-alcoholic mixer. Mixing tonic water with a spirit is an age-old practice, and you can use any liquor: mix a tequila tonic, vodka tonic, or whiskey tonic. The ingredients for a rum tonic are:

  • rum
  • tonic water
  • lime wedges

Use any type of rum!

You can use any type of rum in a rum and tonic, you will get different results! We prefer aged rum or dark rum due to the nuanced flavors you get in the drink. White rum is a bit too subtle (read: boring) for us. Here is an overview of the different types of rum that can be used in this drink, in order of preference:

  • Aged Rum: Also known as golden rum Angel Rum. Aging gives it notes of vanilla, coconut, almond, citrus or caramel.
  • Dark Rum: Also aged, it has a deep caramel flavor and sometimes hints of cinnamon and spice (see dark rum cocktails).
  • coconut rum: The most common is Malibu: a sweet, coconut-flavored liqueur made from Caribbean rum.
  • White Rum: The most common type, featuring an easy tasting rum with the characteristic fruity finish.

All about tonic water

What exactly is tonic water? Tonic water is carbonated water that contains quinine and is lightly sweetened. Its flavor is bubbly, bitter, sweet, and sour, and it’s a popular cocktail mixer dating back hundreds of years.

Quinine was historically prescribed as a medicine to fight malaria, and mixing it with soda water and sugar helped mask its bitter taste. It was first sold in the 1850s. Today the quinine content is much lower than in historical tonic water and is safe to drink. Our favorite brand is Q Tonic: it tastes great and comes in small doses, just enough for a few drinks.
