How do roasted radishes taste?

Radish is a cruciferous vegetable with a beautiful bright red color that turns bright pink when fried. wait what? Cruciferous vegetables are nutritious vegetables in the same family as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, and arugula. Why is that important? Well, that explains somewhat the taste of a roasted radish!

If you’ve tried roasted cauliflower or roasted Brussels sprouts, you’ll find that these very raw-tasting vegetables turn sweet in the oven. When you taste these Roasted Radishes, they have that same smooth, sweet essence you’re used to roasting in this related vegetable!

How To Roast Radishes (Basic Steps!)

Roasted radishes are a perfect springtime recipe. But while you may associate radishes with spring, they’re usually available year-round! You can therefore take back this magic trick at any time. Here are the basic steps for roasting radishes:

  1. Cut in half : Wash 2 small bunches of radishes, remove leaves and cut in half.
  2. Mix with spices: Toss with olive oil, 1 clove of grated garlic, and kosher salt.
  3. Roast 16 to 20 minutes: Place on a baking tray covered with baking paper. Roast until fork tender, about 20 minutes, at 450 degrees Fahrenheit. The exact time depends on the size of the radishes.

When they come out of the oven, the roasted radishes should be soft. Be sure to test the largest radish and poke the fork through the thickest part! Many online recipes vary in time, with some even listing a 10 minute roasting time. Tender radish on the outside, crunchy on the inside is not the desired consistency for us! This recipe makes them perfectly tender and sweet.

Dress up these roasted radishes!

Straight out of the oven, there are a thousand and one ways to top roasted radishes! For this recipe we kept it really simple:

  • Use radish tops as a garnish! Keep in mind that radish leaves are spicy, so don’t use too much! But to get a nice green contrast without having to buy a bunch of parsley, chop the radish tips very finely and sprinkle on top as a garnish.
  • Lemon adds freshness, but is not mandatory. If you like, add a squeeze of lemon for extra freshness! Alex and I found it delicious both ways. Roasted radishes taste tastier without lemon; with lemon it is lighter and fresher!
  • herbs to taste. Fresh herbs would be fantastic if you want to add another flavor nuance. Fresh dill or thyme would be perfect!

Alex and I always recommend that you use this side dish with roasted radishes with at least one other side dish for garnish. Have you ever grilled radishes? Toss them in a hot oven in this unique easy side dish recipe – they come out vibrant and juicy, with a smooth, sweet flavor!

  • 2 small bunches of radishes (approx 16 at 18 small radishes)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • Ground fresh pepper
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice (optional)

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
  2. Wash the radishes and cut the greens, reserving a few leaves for garnish.
  3. Slice the radishes lengthways. In a bowl, mix them with olive oil, finely grated clove of garlic, kosher salt and pepper.
  4. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the radishes, cut side down, on top and roast until the largest radish is tender when pricked in the thickest part with a fork, 16-20 minutes (exact time depends on the size of the radishes).
  5. Mix with lemon juice if desired (we liked it both ways, so it’s not necessary). Finely chop about 1 radish leaf for garnish and sprinkle on top. Serve hot.
