Need help ? Attempt Red Eye Cafe! If you can’t decide between filter coffee and espresso, why not combine them? This drink is extra caffeinated for those days when you need a little extra energy throughout the day. If you prefer flavor, you should opt for several espresso drinks (in fact, we prefer the Americano). But if you need a quick fix: Red Eye Coffee is here!
What is red eye coffee?
Red Eye Coffee is a coffee drink that combines filter coffee with a shot or two of espresso. The name likely refers to a “red-eye flight,” a night flight that causes tired red-eyes in passengers.
There are some variations on the name of this drink, referring to the amount of espresso shots: red eye is 1 shot, black eye is 2 shots, and dead eye or green eye is 3 shots. But if you’re ordering from a coffee shop, you should be able to just order a “red-eye coffee” and specify how many espressos you’d like. The following is included in this drink:
- filter coffee
- 1, 2 or 3 espressos

How to make red eye coffee
A red-eye coffee is easy to make at home. All you have to do is choose your filter coffee method and your espresso method. Here is an overview of the steps, then some details on how to make coffee:
- Make 1 cup of filter coffee (10 ounces or 1 ¼ cup).
- Make 1 double espresso (2 ounces or ¼ cup).
- Pour the espresso into the filter coffee.
What does red-eye coffee taste like? Exactly what you expect: like a filter coffee with a hint of dark, bitter espresso flavor. In fact, the taste of espresso is lost, so we recommend preparing this drink with at least a double shot of espresso. When it comes to flavors, we prefer to drink an Americano and a filter coffee separately to really enjoy the flavors of each. So we only recommend red eyes for a quick fix!
Step 1: Prepare the filter coffee
The first step in red-eye coffee is choosing the filter coffee method. You may already have a favorite filter coffee method, here are ours in order of preference:

Step 2: Prepare espresso
Espresso is a little trickier, but there are many home-made methods for making espresso. Be sure to use a dark roast or espresso coffee bean here. Here are the best ways to brew espresso:
- espresso machine: An espresso machine is the best option: it makes amazing espresso! There are different machines in different price ranges.
- Portable espresso machine: A manual espresso machine is a more affordable option and makes great espresso.
- French press: The French Press Espresso is a great way to use this coffee brewing tool.
- Mocha Sweat: You can also brew strong espresso coffee in a Moka (Bialetti) coffee maker.
