What is Malibu rum?

Malibu is a coconut flavored liqueur made from Caribbean rum. It’s not technically a rum as the alcohol content is low (21% ABV) and it’s made with added sugar. Rum must be 80 degrees (40% ABV) to be legally considered rum and it contains no added sugar.

Malibu was invented in 1982 to make it easier for bartenders to make the piña colada. It is now distributed by the Pernod Ricard company and is popular in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany and France.

How does Malibu Rum taste?

Malibu tastes sweet, with fruity rum notes and a coconut and almond finish. Criticisms of coconut liquor are that it’s too sweet and lacks depth. When preparing a drink, think about its flavor profile (a little goes!).
