What is Malibu rum?
Malibu is a coconut flavored liqueur made from Caribbean rum. It’s not technically a rum as the alcohol content is low (21% ABV) and it’s made with added sugar. Rum must be 80 degrees (40% ABV) to be legally considered rum and it contains no added sugar.
Malibu was invented in 1982 to make it easier for bartenders to make the piña colada. It is now distributed by the Pernod Ricard company and is popular in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany and France.

The description
This Bahama Mama recipe is a fruity beach drink full of coconut and pineapple flavor! Serve frozen or over ice.
- ½ ounce* Grenadine syrup
- 1 ounce dark rum
- 1 ounce coconut rum
- ½ ounce lime juice
- 3 ounces pineapple juice
- 1 cup Ice
- Single drink, frozen: Place the grenadine in the bottom of a highball or hurricane glass. In a blender, mix dark rum, coconut rum, lime juice, pineapple juice and ice until smooth. Slowly pour the blended mixture over the grenadine. Garnish with pineapple or lime wedges.
- Unique drink, on the rocks: Put ice in a glass (you can also use crushed ice). Add dark rum, coconut rum, lime juice and pineapple juice and stir gently. Pour the grenadine into the center of the drink and it will sink to the bottom.
