The sweet, smoky flavor of fire-roasted canned tomatoes is unique! Here’s more about them and the best ways to use them in recipes.
Here’s a tomato variety that’s pure canned magic: Roasted Tomatoes! Maybe you’ve seen cans in the supermarket aisle and wondered what’s so special about this ingredient? Move over ordinary tomatoes. The difference in flavor that fire roasting brings to the table is real enormous. Plus, you can simmer your tomato sauces for less time (and who’s complaining?). Here’s the scarcity of this special ingredient, and why we think it should be in every home cook’s pantry.
What are grilled tomatoes?
Fire roasted tomatoes are canned tomatoes that are roasted over an open flame to bring out their flavor. They taste sweet and subtly smoky straight out of the can, rather than being bitter and sour like most regular canned tomatoes. This variety makes full-bodied tomato sauces and tomato-based soups: and it takes less cooking time to mellow out the flavors.
Where to Find Fire Roasted Tomatoes
Fire roasted tomatoes are available whole, diced, and chopped from a variety of brands at most major grocery stores. Check alongside regular canned tomatoes! Popular brands include Muir Glen, Hunts, Delallo, Simple Truth, etc. (Our favorite? We think Muir Glen has the best overall flavor.)
The taste of fire roasted tomatoes is second to none and hard to replicate! If you can’t find them near you, you can try to use the best canned tomatoes you can find. We recommend adding a pinch of sugar and smoked paprika to mimic its sweet and smoky undertones.
