Have you stumbled upon a perfect strawberry smoothie? Smoothies aren’t as easy to make as they seem. Of course you can throw any fruits and yoghurts into the blender and prepare them. But for them perfect creamy texture and perfect just enough sweet fruit flavor? You must know something about smoothies. Alex and I finally found our perfect strawberry smoothie recipe which can be found below. Do it, remember it, and make the perfect healthy smoothie time and time again!

What makes a perfect strawberry smoothie?

Alex and I have been cooking for years and have a vegetarian cookbook under our belts, mastered techniques like sourdough bread and pizza, and tons of cocktails. So we decided: why not master smoothies? We started with this strawberry smoothie recipe. Here’s what it’s perfect for us:

  • Light and creamy texture. Smoothies can easily become too frosty or thick. This one is light and creamy, with just the right amount of icy, airy texture.
  • Subtly sweet and fruity taste. Taste is the variable: smoothies are often too bitter or too sweet. It’s also easy to hide the “signature” taste. This strawberry smoothie is slightly sweet with just the right amount of berry essence.

Ingredients for this strawberry smoothie

That’s what you need for this strawberry smoothie! Alex and I made sure that the ingredients in this smoothie were healthy: no juices or syrups that were too sweet. Here’s what we chose:

  • Frozen Strawberries: Frozen berries are easy to find and store, and give this smoothie a great icy texture. If you want to use fresh berries, use a frozen banana.
  • Fresh banana: Our favorite are smoothie recipes that call for frozen bananas because we never have them on hand! We usually want a smoothie recipe Now. So we adjusted this one to use a fresh banana.
  • Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt gives this recipe a boost of protein and helpful probiotics. (You can add a dash more if you like yogurt.) There’s the perfect creamy texture, too.
  • Ice: Here comes the most important part: ice cream is essential for a perfect strawberry smoothie! It makes just the right frothy texture. We tried it without and it definitely makes a difference. Don’t refrain!
  • Milk: You need the right amount of liquid in a smoothie for it to blend. Too little and the blender will get stuck (worst of all!), and too much will taste milky. You can also use non-dairy products (see below).
  • maple syrup: A hint of maple brings out the sweetness of the berries. With a low-sugar diet you can do without it, but without sweeteners it doesn’t taste sweet enough.

How to make it plant-based/vegan!

You can prepare this plant-based or vegan strawberry smoothie as follows:

  • Prepare our Strawberry Banana Smoothie. Try our Strawberry Banana Smoothie: it’s vegan and uses only 2 ingredients!
  • Replace the yogurt with plant-based milk AND vegan yogurt or ½ banana. We like to use oat milk or almond milk. Oat milk is usually a bit sweeter and creamier, so we like it a bit more. You can also try coconut milk, which adds a nice coconut essence, or soy milk. Then use vegan yogurt or another ½ banana for the yogurt.

Optional additions and variants

Of course, you can mix and match whatever you like to customize your healthy strawberry smoothie! But at the same time: if you want it perfect, you need to use flavors that work. Here are a few ideas:

  • Almond butter. Almond goes well with strawberries. Use about 1 tbsp, 2 for a stronger almond flavor (this will also dull the color a bit).
  • Vanilla. Use ¼ to ½ teaspoon vanilla to enhance flavors.
  • mint or basil. Add a few fresh mint or basil leaves for an herbal touch.
  • Pineapple. Substitute 1 cup of frozen pineapple for 1 cup of frozen berries. Go to Strawberry Pineapple Smoothie.
  • Mango. Substitute 1 cup of frozen mango for 1 cup of frozen berries. Opt for the strawberry and mango smoothie.
  • Banana. Add another very ripe banana and remove the Greek yogurt. Opt for the strawberry banana smoothie.
  • blueberries. Substitute blueberries for 1 cup of frozen strawberries. Or go to Strawberry Blueberry Smoothie.
  • Chocolate. add cocoa powder; Continue to Chocolate Strawberry Smoothie.

Smoothie Storage

Smoothies are best consumed immediately. But this strawberry smoothie will actually last 1-2 days in the fridge if stored in an airtight container or mason jar with a lid. It can separate, which is perfectly natural. Shake it and you’re good to go!

The description

This is the most perfect strawberry smoothie you can find! It’s easy to blend and has the best creamy texture and fruity flavor. Variation: Try our strawberry banana smoothie (2 ingredients and vegan!).


  • 2 cups frozen strawberries
  • 1 banana (room temperature)
  • ¼ cup Greek yogurt*
  • 1 cup milk (or almond milk or oat milk)
  • 1½ tablespoons maple syrup, honey or agave syrup
  • ½ cup Ice
  • Optional additions: 1 tablespoon almond butter, ¼ teaspoon vanilla, fresh mint leaves or basil leaves

  1. Put all the ingredients in a blender and break the banana into chunks. Blend until creamy and fluffy, stopping and scraping the sides if necessary. Garnish with a frozen strawberry and a sprig of mint, if you like. Serve immediately or refrigerate in a sealed jar for 2 days.

Remarks

*For vegans: make a strawberry banana smoothie! Combine 2 cups frozen strawberries, 2 bananas (room temperature), ½ cup water and 8 ice cubes.
