What is dragon fruit?

Dragon fruit is a tropical fruit native to Mexico and Central America but now grown all over the world. The most common species are bright pink on the outside with green scales: hence the name! When you cut dragon fruit, the flesh is white with black seeds. It might sound unique, but the flavor isn’t unusual: it almost tastes like a sweet kiwi!

Where can you buy dragon fruit?

Where can I find dragon fruit commercially? When you make a smoothie, it’s easier buy frozen pureed dragon fruit. Sometimes you can find it whole and fresh in a grocery store, but it’s usually hard to find. Frozen porridge is available in the frozen section of many grocery stores, and you can also buy it online.

Tips for blending a dragon fruit smoothie

The only difficult part of making a frozen mash smoothie is mixing it up! When using a lot of frozen ingredients, the blender can sometimes get stuck. We learned a few tips while making our acai smoothie that also apply to this dragon fruit smoothie recipe. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Use a good blender. Of course, this smoothie will work in any blender, but a quality blender makes the process that much easier! The best scenario is a high speed mixer.
  • Thaw the wrappers under lukewarm water until you can break them into small pieces. Then remove the packaging. Breaking them into pieces is useful for shuffling.
  • First pour the liquid on the bottom of the blender. This helps the blades spin freely and not get stuck on frozen fruit.
  • Add more water if needed. Stop scraping and adding a little more water if needed until the smoothie has the right texture. Don’t add too much water: it can dilute the flavor.

Protein adder!

As it is, this dragon fruit smoothie recipe doesn’t contain a lot of protein like some of our other smoothies (like our vanilla protein smoothie or our yogurt smoothie). It’s a pure vegan fruit smoothie! Would you like to add plant-based proteins? Here are a few ideas:

  • 1 tablespoon nut butter. The best nut butters to pair with tropical flavors are almond butter or cashew butter. 1 tablespoon adds 4 grams of protein.
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds. This amount adds 4 grams of protein and 11 grams of fiber to your smoothie (see this chia seed smoothie).
  • 1 tablespoon protein powder: Use your favorite protein powder to add a boost.

Toppings for a dragon fruit smoothie

Want to turn that dragon fruit smoothie into a meal? Add toppings! You can turn it into a dragon fruit smoothie bowl, like an acai bowl, or just add the toppings right into the smoothie. Here are some toppings we recommend:

  • Almond butter: Our favorite for gourmet smoothies! It adds just the right savory flavor.
  • Kiwi: The cut kiwi creates a beautiful color contrast.
  • Strawberries or Raspberries: Pink berries make a beautiful monochromatic look.
  • Blueberries or Blackberries: These berries create a contrast.
  • coconut flakes: Use toasted coconut for a crunch!
