Looking for a super sweet and creamy winter cocktail? try that Russian White Peppermint! Indeed, this version of the classic Strength even more fun than the original. It has a glossy, minty finish that pairs perfectly with Kahlua and cream. It’s quick and easy to stir together in a lowball glass and is an absolute crowd pleaser. Who could resist that?
What’s in a Peppermint White Russian?
The White Russian is a classic vodka, cream and coffee liqueur cocktail invented in the 1950s. It’s an offshoot of another classic cocktail, the Black Russian, invented in 1949, which simply combines vodka and Kahlua. You may know this drink from the 1998 film The big Lebowskibut its history is much longer.
The Peppermint White Russian simply adds peppermint schnapps to this classic recipe for a minty finish to every sip. In our opinion, it sweetens the flavors into an even more interesting balance! Here’s what you need:
Important: 100 proof liquor
There are a few types of peppermint liquor you can find in stores and online: 30 proof (15% vol), 60 proof (30% vol), and 100 proof (50% vol). As you can imagine, 100 proof is very strong. If the bottle says 100 proof, skip the amount in the recipe and add to taste!

How sweet is this drink?
The White Russian is a notoriously sweet drink because of the Kahlua. This coffee liqueur adds a healthy dose of sugar to the drink! Tia Maria is a more refined version of the coffee liqueur, making it a slightly more balanced beverage. You might consider this for a classier ride here.
The peppermint schnapps also adds sweetness, but interestingly the mint flavor helps balance out the sweetness. In our opinion, the Peppermint White Russian has a more balanced taste than the classic, but is still quite a sweet drink.
Use milk instead of cream
Want to make a light version of this white Russian recipe with peppermint? Use 2% milk or whole milk. Here are the pros and cons of using milk instead of cream:
- Against : Milk doesn’t taste as good as cream.
- Professional: It makes this cocktail easier to drink as it is less rich and reduces calories. We tend to like it with milk for a lighter flavor.
