What is Peppermint Patty Drink?

Peppermint Patty Drink (Hot Peppermint Patty) is a hot chocolate flavored with both mint and chocolate liqueur. The way the liqueurs layer the flavors in the rich chocolate actually gives it the flavor of the candy of the same name!

The story behind this drink recipe is murky, but here’s what we do know: It was mentioned in a 2015 episode of the cartoon archer, where Archer enjoys a thermos of the stuff and says, “I call it a peppermint patty!” While many people claim Archer invented the drink, other sources claim it existed long before that. (Have any leads? Let us know in the comments below!) Here’s what you need to make a Peppermint Patty drink:

  • Hot chocolate (homemade is better)
  • cocoa cream
  • peppermint schnapps

Notes on mint liqueurs

The Archer definition of this drink also includes crème de menthe, another mint liqueur. Put simply, we’ve adapted our version of the peppermint patty drink to use only one peppermint liqueur: Schnapps! Here are some things to note about both:

  • peppermint schnapps is a clear alcohol obtained by adding a peppermint flavor to a clear grain alcohol. The taste is like a candy cane, with a spicy, alcoholic finish. The starch tastes almost like mouthwash! It’s very cheap: a 750ml bottle costs $8-10.
  • White mint cream is another slightly harder-to-find mint liqueur. It has a smoother, more balanced minty flavor and is used in other cocktails like the Stinger. You can also use a dash of crème de menthe if you like. Just make sure not Use spearmint cream, which gives a grasshopper’s signature green color! It would blur the colors of this drink.

Important: 100 proof liquor

There are a few types of peppermint liquor you can find in stores and online: 30 proof (15% vol), 60 proof (30% vol), and 100 proof (50% vol). As you can imagine, 100 proof is very strong. If the bottle says 100 proof, skip the amount in the recipe and add to taste!

Learn more about cocoa cream

Crème de cacao is the chocolate liquor that gives Peppermint Patty its rich, signature flavor! It is used in other cocoa cream drinks as the Brandy Alexander And Chocolate Martini. What you should know about this liqueur:

  • cocoa cream is a chocolate liqueur, available in white (clear) and black. It may be one of the first alcoholic beverages made by monks in the 16th century after cocoa beans were brought to Europe from America (source).
  • How does it taste? The white cocoa cream tastes like milk chocolate with a hint of vanilla. Dark Cocoa Cream has a richer flavor with hints of dark chocolate. You can use either in this drink, but we used white.
  • How much does it cost? A 750ml bottle costs between $10 and $20.
