The Peanut Butter Oatmeal Key

Here’s the thing. We thought peanut butter oatmeal would be absolutely delicious when you toss creamy peanut butter right in the pan and bake. Bad! Here’s what happened and how to avoid it:

  • Don’t add peanut butter to the pan while the oats are cooking. Why? When it’s done, you can barely smell the peanut butter. Even if you add a lot of PB, there’s some flavor and texture that’s just right Not true. (Trust us.)
  • The best way? Sprinkle on top just before serving. Yes, that is, oatmeal with peanut butter. But it’s the only way to get it large Peanut Butter Flavor! Top immediately and the heat from the oats melts the heart.

Why It’s the Best Oatmeal: Toasted and Chewy!

The other part of that peanut butter oatmeal? You must make the best pot of oatmeal imaginable! Here we are creamy and slippery anti-oatmeal with no texture. Our finest rolled oats are slightly chewy and toasted before the liquid is added. That makes him absolutely irresistible. Here are the keys to toasted oatmeal:

  • Toast oats in butter or coconut oil until fragrant. It only takes a minute or two, but it makes a big difference.
  • Add the liquid and cook over low heat without stirring. This simple method makes split-grain oats chewy instead of making a gooey mess.
  • If you like it creamier, add milk at the end. Add as much milk as you like to give these oats a creamier texture.

Variation: Oatmeal with banana and peanut butter

Do you like your oatmeal sweet? No problem! Adding mashed bananas during the cooking time gives the oatmeal a nice creamy body and a slightly sweet flavor. This is one of our favorite variations and a quicker way to get the flavor of our Baked Banana Oatmeal. Try this variation if you have some ripe bananas on hand!

Peanut Butter Oatmeal Toppings

What’s your favorite way to top your oatmeal? These peanut butter oatmeal are absolutely perfect with just a swirl of nut butter on top. I’ll admit it: My daily oatmeal (and I eat it every day) is simply oatmeal, peanut butter, and salt. I like the salty side! But do you want to lighten it up a bit? Here are a few ideas:

  • Honey or Maple Syrup: a small net is enough!
  • Jam or jelly: PB&J Oatmeal is where it’s at! Try our homemade strawberry jam
  • Berry: Blueberries, blackberries and strawberries go well together
  • banana slices: Especially if you’re making the peanut butter and banana variant
  • bee pollen: The confetti in the photos is bee pollen and adds a nice crunch

More variations: swap nut butters!

It goes without saying that peanut butter oatmeal can transform into all sorts of other types of oatmeal just by swapping out the nut butter. We like to make many different nut butters at home, but these days you can easily find them at your local grocery store. Here are some fun variations:

  • Almond butter: Top it with homemade almond butter (vanilla bean or chai variations would be killer)
  • Pecan Butter: we especially like this homemade pecan butter on oatmeal
  • cashew butter: another great option! Cashew butter has a wonderfully sweet taste
  • nut butter: this cinnamon-flavoured nut butter is particularly delicious
