Panaché is a quick and refreshing French beverage prepared with 7-Up and beer.

My first drink in Disney World was a panaché, a French cocktail made of light beer and a citrus soda similar to 7 Up.

Grapefruit Shandy

My French sweetheart got us a shaded table and returned with a dish of ice-filled glasses, two beers, and a few cans of 7 Up. Mixing 7 Up and beer isn’t for everyone.

Still, we were weary and had little opposition. We got a sneak peek, and every reservation vanished. In my opinion, there is no better drink in the world on a hot day.

Why?

A panaché is energising, so.

Compared to pure soda, it is not as overly sweet. Before you notice there is even a hint of alcohol from the beer in them, you can consume several cups.

Although ice in drinks isn’t as prevalent in Europe as it is here, it’s even better with ice in my opinion, and I agree. It’s not typically served with ice in France.

I wanted to save this for Bastille Day because it’s a French favourite and all. But here we are, it’s 40 degrees Celsius in Sacramento today, and it’s expected to be well over 100 degrees Celsius all week. Our Arizonan neighbours have it even worse (111 degrees in Phoenix, yuck!).

Stay cool, wherever you are. And don’t forget to sample a panaché!

Numerous readers have noted that this combination is known as “Shady” in many regions of the English-speaking globe, as well as “Elise” in other nations.

Proportions might range from 1/4 to 1/2 beer with the remainder 7-up or Sprite. Just make sure to use a pale (rather than a dark) beer. It isn’t necessary to have a “light” beer, but that would be fine as well.

ingredients panache

  • 1 part beer: preferably a light beer, such as a Bud or Miller.
  • one to three portions Sprite or 7-up?

method

  1. Pour a big glass halfway with ice. Pour beer into glass to the quarter or halfway mark, depending on your preferred proportions. Finish with Sprite or 7Up. Drink.
