Ingredients of this oat milk smoothie

This oat milk smoothie recipe works with all types of frozen fruit. But you can’t go wrong with the Banana Strawberry! It’s our favorite way to fuel up with healthy fruit that tastes like dessert. Here are the ingredients you will need:

  • Frozen strawberries (or other frozen fruit): Strawberries are our number one choice, but there are many other ways to mix and match this recipe.
  • fresh banana: All you need are two room temperature bananas. You don’t have to remember to freeze them!
  • Oat milk (simply unflavored): Use plain or unflavored oat milk. You can use vanilla if you like, but sometimes vanilla flavors are too sweet or artificial.
  • Ice: The ice adds just the right icy texture.
  • Maple Syrup or Honey (optional): Whether you need it depends on how ripe the bananas are. Sometimes frozen strawberries can also be very tart and need some sweetener. Add a twist to taste.

Why use oat milk in smoothies?

Oat milk is a non-dairy, plant-based milk made from oats and water. It’s fantastic for smoothies because it’s a non-dairy milk that helps achieve a creamy texture. Side note: This is great for vegan lattes, too! It is one of the few vegan milks that foams like cow’s milk. Here’s what you should know about using oat milk in smoothies:

  • Can oat milk be tasted in smoothies? Not really! Oat milk tastes similar to cow’s milk and blends well with flavors.
  • Does oat milk make smoothies fatter? Again not really. But one thing to note: oat milk has a creamier texture than cow’s milk than almond milk, which is more like water. It is therefore a very good substitute for cow’s milk.

Ways to add protein to this oat milk smoothie

This oat milk smoothie is vegan, meaning it doesn’t contain cow’s milk or yogurt like our standard smoothie recipes. Here’s the thing: Those two ingredients contain a good amount of protein. So if you’re looking for a high-protein drink, consider adding one of the following:

  • almond butter: Add 1 tbsp almond butter or use 2 tbsp for an even nuttier flavor. It adds an almond flavor and dulls the color of the smoothie a bit.
  • Protein powder: Protein powder is another plant-based way to boost the protein content of this smoothie. Use a good quality vanilla protein powder (check out this Energy Balls article for some tips on buying a good brand).
  • Chia seeds: Add 2 tablespoons of chia seeds to this smoothie to add 11 grams of fiber and 4 grams of protein!
