What is a moka pot?
The Moka Pot is a stovetop coffee maker used to prepare espresso coffee. It uses boiling water to force steam through the coffee grounds, allowing the coffee to bubble in the pot instead of seeping like brewed coffee does.
The moka pot was invented in 1933 by an Italian engineer, Alfonso Bialetti. It is made by the Bialetti company, so some people just call it “Bialetti”.

Does the Moka Pot make espresso or coffee?
The Moka Pot is the most famous espresso machine, however It doesn’t really make espresso. It’s a very strong coffee that looks like espresso but isn’t quite real. It doesn’t get the frothy crema like a real espresso and it lacks flavor. It also brews in larger quantities than a typical espresso. In fact, moka pot coffee is closer to an americano than an espresso.
Why isn’t it an espresso? The moka pot only achieves 1-3 bar of pressure when forcing water through the coffee grounds, compared to 9 bar of pressure like an espresso machine. But the taste is so close that you can use Moka Pot coffee as a substitute for espresso in espresso drinks like lattes, iced lattes, etc.
