This recipe contains a double dose of chocolate: both real chocolate in the espresso and chocolate syrup in the frothed milk. Each sip is rich and dreamy, flavored with just the right amount of delicate chocolate sweetness. Here’s what you need to know to make it at home!

What is a mocha cappuccino?

A mocha cappuccino is another name for a mocha Where mocha latte: a drink made from espresso, frothed milk and chocolate. A cappuccino is very similar to a latte: it just has a different ratio of milk to espresso. So mocha latte And Mocha cappuccino are basically the same.

You can’t order a mocha cappuccino from Starbucks or any other coffee shop: so order it with the words mocha, mocha coffee Where mocha latte. It should be noted that a Mocha Frappuccino is coffee, milk and chocolate syrup mixed with ice cream: essentially a chocolate and coffee milkshake.

The difference between this recipe and our classic mocha? This one has chocolate syrup in the milk, not just in the espresso. The ingredients you need to make a mocha cappuccino are:

For the espresso

To make a mocha cappuccino, you need a homemade espresso method! The best way is to use a tabletop espresso machine, but the cost can be prohibitive. Fortunately, there are several other excellent espresso methods:

  • espresso machine: The best way to prepare espresso is with a table espresso machine: the taste is impeccable. Go to How to make an espresso.
  • Manual espresso machine: Without a machine, you can use a small manual espresso machine: it’s cheaper and portable! It’s our top pick off the machine.
  • French press: The French Press Espresso is a great option when using a tool you may already have on hand.
  • Mocha pot (series): Try moka pot coffee for a dark, espresso-like coffee (it’s like a cross between filter coffee and espresso).

Steam or froth milk

The other important thing about making a mocha cappuccino: the method of steaming or frothing the milk! Remember: fresh whole milk is best for this process. For vegans, you can use oat milk! If you have an espresso machine you can froth the milk, otherwise you can use one of the different milk froth methods below. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Steam the milk: If you have an espresso machine, this is the way to go! It’s a bit technical, but the result is a rich, creamy micro mousse. And you can make latte art like we did in the pictures! Go to How to steam milk.
  • Froth milk (without machine): There are several ways to froth milk. The best method is a hand frother, but you can also use a French press or whisk. Go to How to froth milk.

How to make a mocha cappuccino

Once you understand the espresso and milk methods, making a mocha cappuccino is a breeze! Continue with the following recipe or repeat the basic idea below:

  • Make the espresso. Go to Making espresso.
  • Place the chocolate chips in the cup and then add the espresso. The heat of the coffee melts the chocolate!
  • Frothing milk and chocolate syrup (espresso machine method) OR Heat the milk and syrup on the stove and then froth. Heat the milk in a saucepan until it reaches 150 degrees Fahrenheit, perfect: Here the milk will be warm to the touch but not boiling. Then, using your preferred method, froth the milk until very foamy.
  • Surcharge. Pour the chocolate milk foam into the chocolate espresso and serve!

  • 1 double dose espresso (2 ounces)
  • 1 tbsp chocolate chips
  • 4 oz (½ cup) fresh whole milk* (double for two portions when steaming)
  • 1 tbsp chocolate syrup

  1. Prepare espresso: Prepare the espresso with an espresso machine, a manual espresso machine, a French press or a moka pot. See Making Espresso for instructions. Place the chocolate chips in the cup and pour the espresso over them.
  2. Steam or froth milk and chocolate syrup (double batch): Pour the chocolate syrup into the milk. Steam the milk with an espresso machine or heat and froth the milk with your preferred method (milk frother, French press, whisk or saucepan with a lid). It’s easiest to steam or froth 1 cup of milk for 2 drinks, so use 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup. See How to steam milk or How to froth milk for more information.
  3. Surcharge: Shake the milk container several times. Pour the milk and foam into the center of the chocolate espresso. Garnish with chocolate shavings for decoration, if you like.

Remarks

*Fresh whole milk works best; Milk that is a few weeks old may not foam. Oat milk is best for a vegan mocha cappuccino.
