It’s a great way to enjoy all the benefits of green tea while sipping on a fruity puree! This is our favorite way to make a matcha smoothie.

What is matcha?

matcha is a fine powder of ground green tea leaves native to East Asia. It is consumed in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies and is an integral part of Japanese culture. There is a complex set of ceremonial niceties in the tea ceremony (read more here).

Matcha has a grassy, earthy flavor. It can be consumed as a cup of tea or as a latte such as Matcha Latte or Iced Matcha Latte. It’s also a popular flavor for ice cream, cakes, cookies and more. Warning: Matcha contains caffeine: more than classic green tea, but less than coffee!

Matcha smoothie ingredients

This matcha smoothie combines sweet fruit flavors with the bitter, grassy taste of green tea. It’s easy to prepare with a short list of ingredients. What you need for this matcha smoothie:

  • frozen pineapple
  • banana
  • matcha
  • vanilla extract
  • greek yogurt (or extra milk)
  • milk of your choice (milk, oats or coconut)
  • Ice
  • maple syrup or honey (optional; or vanilla protein powder)

Mix it up and taste it: and we hope you will be surprised by the sweet and fruity puree! You can mix it without any sweetener and taste if you want to add it. Matcha bitterness can vary depending on the variety used (see below), so you can adjust the sweetener to suit your taste. Or add vanilla protein powder instead: it adds a touch of protein and sweetness at the same time!

A Note on Matcha Species

There are three grades of matcha that correspond to quality. We recommend using Ceremonial Grade or Latte Grade here (we used Ceremonial Grade). Why? The difference in color and taste is very noticeable! The ceremonial variety produces the lightest color and tastes much better than the other varieties. Here is an overview of the Matcha varieties:

  • Ceremonial grade matcha is the highest quality and suitable for tea ceremonies; it has the lightest green color and the sweetest taste (buy it!)
  • Latte quality matcha is a little less light green and has a more bitter taste (buy it!)
  • Culinary quality matcha has a greenish-brown color and is quite bitter

Vegan variant

Fancy a dairy-free matcha smoothie? Skip the Greek yogurt and just use your favorite milk. With its creamy texture and neutral taste, oat milk is our most popular plant-based milk for smoothies. Coconut milk would work just as well here! You may need to add a little more liquid since you’re substituting for the Greek yogurt.

We also recommend adding protein as you’re losing some with Greek yogurt. This is especially important if you’re using this smoothie as a meal replacement! Try vanilla protein powder or 1-2 tablespoons of chia seeds.

Matcha smoothie

can you advance

This matcha smoothie won’t separate in the fridge! So it’s great if you want to mix it up and save half for later. We’ve found that matcha tastes more bitter over time, so feel free to add a little more sweetener if you like.

The description

This matcha smoothie recipe is a great way to enjoy all the goodness of green tea: while sipping on a delicious fruity drink!

  • 1 ½ cups frozen pineapple
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 tbsp Matcha green tea powder*
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup Greek yogurt (or omit for non-dairy)
  • ½ cup Milk of your choice (milk, oat or coconut)
  • ½ cup Ice
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup or honey (optional; or vanilla protein powder)

  1. Put all the ingredients in a blender and break the banana into chunks. If desired, you can mix without the sweetener first and taste before adding. Blend until creamy and fluffy, stopping and scraping the sides if needed and adding a little more milk if needed. Serve immediately or refrigerate for up to 1 day (bitter taste will be more prominent when sitting, so you may need to adjust with sweetener after storage).

Remarks

*For the lightest green color and best flavor, we recommend this Ceremonial Matcha. This latte-grade matcha will also work, but is more muted in color and tastes more bitter. Avoid culinary-grade matcha here; the taste is not there.
