Did you know you can make homemade Italian condiments? It’s a blend of 5 herbs and comes together in minutes. How to make Italian spices

Italian spices are not used in Italian cuisine! There is also no official “definition”. It is a blend of spices created to allow chefs to quickly add a Mediterranean touch to dishes. Most blends you find in the store contain similar herbs: oregano, basil, and thyme are the heavyweights.

For this recipe we wanted to keep it very simple and use ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry. To prepare the Italian seasoning, mix together the following herbs:

  • Dried oregano
  • Dried Basil
  • Dried thyme (not ground)
  • Dried Sage

A few comments

Dried thyme is sold in two ways: in large leaves and finely ground. Be sure to use the entire leaf variety for this recipe!

You’ll also find that unlike many spice blends, Italian seasonings are salt-free. Keep this in mind when using it to flavor food: you need to add a little salt for the flavor to kick in.

How Long to Store Homemade Italian Seasonings

You can store your homemade Italian seasoning mix in an airtight container 6 months to 1 year. Of course, it’s best when it’s freshest! Spices can be stored in a cool, dry place for 8 months to 1 year. With this spice mix you can breathe new life into old spices.

Ways to use Italian spices

Italian seasoning can be used for almost anything! There’s not much that doesn’t get better with a pinch of this. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  1. In olive oil as a dip: Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and dip the bread.
  2. Crackers or Bread: Add to homemade cracker or flatbread dough.
  3. Pizza: Sprinkle over the cheese pizza.
  4. White beans: Drizzle the white beans with olive oil and add a few shakes.
  5. Fried vegetables: Roasted broccoli and cauliflower with lemon herbs use this tangy spice.
  6. Fried vegetables: This easy-to-prepare dish features Old Bay and Italian seasoning.
  7. Shrimp: Add a pinch of grilled shrimp, baked shrimp, or sautéed shrimp.
  8. Salmon: Try baked salmon or salmon with cedar plank and a squeeze of lemon.
