Instant Pot Brown Rice

What really convinced Alex and I to finally have an Instant Pot was this: it doubles as a rice cooker! This meant we could ditch our rice cooker to make room for a pressure cooker. Although we’ve cooked all sorts of things in our Instant Pot, one of our favorite ways to use it is with rice. It is a completely self-contained method and also saves time. Here’s our Instant Pot brown rice recipe!

Cooking brown rice in a pressure cooker or pressure cooker is easy and a totally convenient method! We love that it frees up the stove for the main course, e.g. B. when we prepare a curry or a stir fry. Using a pressure cooker also saves time! Cooking on the stovetop can take up to 55 minutes. How long does Instant Pot brown rice last? Approximately 35 minutes — including ‘warm-up time’ and natural release time. The cooking part only takes 20 minutes!

White rice vs brown rice

White rice is so much faster to cook than brown rice, why would you want to eat it? It turns out that brown rice has many nutritional benefits. Brown rice packs an impressive amount of vitamins, minerals, and beneficial compounds because it’s less processed than white rice. If you want to get technical…

  • White rice has its Peel, bran and germ removed.
  • Brown rice receives nutrient-rich bran and germ and only the hull was removed. In this way, it retains nutrients that white rice lacks, such as vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It also contains more fiber.

In total: Brown rice contains more nutrients than white rice! So if you can find the time to cook it, brown rice is a great choice.

What pressure cooker/pressure cooker do you use?

An Instant Pot is a brand of programmable electric pressure cooker. The concept is to cook food under high pressure, which reduces cooking time and allows for even cooking. There are many brands of pressure cookers, including Instant Pot. The pressure cooker we use is this 6 liter instant pot. We have been using it for years and can only recommend it!

The description

Here’s how to make Instant Pot brown rice! A pressure cooker can also be used as a rice cooker: it’s a totally convenient way to cook this whole grain.

  • 2 cups long grain brown rice (American long grain rice, basmati or jasmine)*
  • 2 cups the water
  • Kosher salt

  1. Rinse rice. Add the rice and water to the Instant Pot and stir. Lock the Instant Pot lid. Place the pressure relief (vent) handle in the “seal” position.
  2. Cook at high pressure for 20 minutes: Press the pressure cook button, make sure the ‘high pressure’ setting is selected and set the time. Note that it takes about 5 minutes for the pan to “preheat” and build pressure before you start cooking. (Avoid touching the metal part of the lid during cooking.)
  3. Natural release for 10 minutes: After the Instant Pot beeps, set a timer and wait 10 minutes to allow the Instant Pot to naturally depressurize. Then release the remaining steam by setting the vent to “ventilation” and covering your hand with a towel or heating pad. Never put your hands or face near the opening when dispensing steam. (The pressure indicator in the lid may drop by itself during this time, which means that there is no longer any steam in the pan.)
  4. Open the lid and stir the rice with a fork. Stir in kosher salt to taste. Serve immediately or refrigerate for 3-4 days. (Note: When reheating leftovers, it helps to add a little water and then reheat on the stovetop or in the microwave. Adding water will help rehydrate the rice so it doesn’t become dry!)

Remarks

*A note on amounts: We’ve found that cooking 2 cups of rice in our Instant Pot works the most reliably. If you’re making a recipe that only calls for 1 cup of rice, you can freeze and reheat the leftovers. 1 cup of dry rice makes about 3 cups cooked.
