What’s in an Iced Mocha?

An Eismokka is a coffee drink made from espresso, milk and chocolate, served over ice. It’s a variation on hot mocha or mocha latte, a drink made with espresso, frothed milk, and chocolate. There are several ways to add chocolate to an iced mocha. Starbucks Iced Mocha uses chocolate syrup.

In our recipe testing, we found that store-bought chocolate syrup can taste artificial and not chocolatey enough. So why not… use real chocolate? This frozen mocha features chocolate chips with creamy milk and simple syrup. Here are the ingredients you will need:

  • espresso
  • milk (Use oat milk for vegans or dairy-free; it’s the best non-dairy milk for frothing)
  • simple syrup
  • chocolate chips

How do you make espresso

The most complicated part of an iced mocha? Make the espresso! There are several ways to make a good espresso at home. An espresso machine tastes best, but not everyone has one! Here are the next best options:

  • espresso machine: The taste of espresso with a countertop espresso machine is the best there is. Go to How to make an espresso.
  • Manual espresso machine: The next best option? A small manual espresso machine: it’s cheaper and portable!
  • French press: Making a French Press espresso is a great option using a tool you may already have on hand.
  • Mocha pot (series): For a dark, espresso-like coffee, try Moka Pot Coffee: It’s like a cross between filter coffee and espresso, and works well here.

How to make a frozen mocha: in a glass!

Iced mocha is easier to make at home than a regular mocha because you don’t have to froth the milk. Instead, you can froth the milk simply by shaking it in a glass! The stir-bowl method also works for melting chocolate. Here’s an overview of what to do (or jump to the recipe below):

  • In a covered glass, shake hot espresso and chocolate chips together. This will melt the chocolate in the coffee. Pour into the glass filled with ice.
  • Shake milk and simple syrup in the same glass. Rinse first, then shake milk and syrup until foamy.

That’s it! The jar is a great tool for making a killer iced moka at home. Let us know if you try it and what you think! (Let us know your favorite method for making homemade espresso, too.)
