Are you looking for THE BEST way to brew a great cup of coffee, especially when travelling? Enter the Aeropress! It might sound a little crazy, but this little guy makes a really good cup of coffee. It’s also a fairly affordable coffee maker: barely around $30! Because it makes 1 cup at a time, it’s great for single cups when you don’t want a full pot. And it’s perfect for on the go! Alex and I have ridden ours all over the world, from Italy to Arizona. Here’s how to make coffee with an Aeropress, including a video tutorial!

How to use an Aeropress

Using an Aeropress takes some practice, but once you learn it will become second nature! It’s perfect for on the go or for brewing a single cup of coffee. Here are some things you should know about using an Aeropress – then refer to the recipe below for the official recipe. The most important steps are:

  1. Heat filtered water to 200 to 205 degrees. We’ve found that the filtered water tastes the best (here’s the filtered pitcher we use – of course, if you’re on the go, you can skip that!). We use a kettle to heat the water.
  2. Measure and grind your coffee. For 1 cup of coffee you only need 3 tablespoons of beans! Grind it to a medium-fine grind. We like a light or medium roast, but you can use a dark roast if you prefer.
  3. Add the filter and coffee and let it bloom. Then let the coffee steep for 30 seconds by wetting all the coffee grounds and letting them sit. The flower releases CO2 from the coffee and causes the grind size to grow and increase.
  4. Add the remaining water, stir and then press the plunger. Then add the remaining water to make your coffee and stir 20 times. Then add the plunger and squeeze until all the water is pushed through the filter. Watch the video of this part!

And this is how you use an Aeropress! If you practice a few times, it will become second nature. When we first started making Aeropress coffee, Alex always made the coffee because I was afraid of messing it up. After he showed me several times, I realized it was easy! It’s perfect for the best cup of coffee on the go. Have Any Thoughts: Have you tried making Aeropress coffee? Let us know in the comments below!

Variant: Aeropress espresso!

Did you know that you can prepare espresso with an Aeropress? Well, the Aeropress can’t make an actual espresso with the bubbly “cream” tip you would get at your favorite coffee shop. But it does what we will call Espresso Aeropress (brilliant term, right?): a very strong coffee that tastes like espresso. Drop it as is or use it in espresso drinks like latte macchiato and cappuccino. Access our Aeropress Espresso Recipe!

  • water (preferably filtered)
  • coffee grinder
  • aeropress
  • 1 Aeropress filter

  1. In an electric teapot, heat the water to 200-205°F.
  2. Grind 3 tablespoons (18 grams) of coffee beans to a medium-fine grind.
  3. Place the disc filter in the Aeropress basket and wet until completely wet. Screw the basket onto the end of the Aeropress.
  4. Pour the coffee grounds into the Aeropress, then place on an empty cup.
  5. When the water is ready, pour some over the coffee grounds until the coffee grounds are damp. Wait about 30 seconds for the coffee to bloom.
  6. Pour water into the Aeropress to the 3 1/2 line. Stir about 20 times with the stirring rod provided. Don’t worry if the coffee level drops slightly.
  7. Insert the piston into the top of the Aeropress. Push gently (avoid the urge to force). Wait until the plunger is pushed all the way down; You will hear a hiss of air escaping (this process takes about 30 seconds).
  8. Remove the Aeropress, unscrew the basket and hold it over a compost bin or trash can. Squeeze the plunger to release the filter and powder. Rinse the Aeropress so it is ready for future use. Enjoy your perfect cup of coffee!
