These Italian nuts are delicious on their own, but when you toast them, they’re taken to the absolute next level! As with any nut, roasting enhances the flavor. Just a few minutes in a hot pan and the flavor is even warmer and nuttier. How to Roast Pine Nuts! Prepare Roasted Pine Nuts on the stovetop when you have a small batch of nuts and want them ready quickly.

  • Advantages: This method is so fast: it only takes 3 minutes!
  • Disadvantages: Stovetop roasting nuts can cook unevenly and is more difficult to roast in large quantities.
  • Basic hotplate method (to the recipe): Place the walnuts in a dry pan (do not add oil!). Heat over medium-high heat until golden and fragrant, about 3 minutes. Our biggest tip: do not leave the stove as the nuts can burn very easily. We know from experience!

Roast pine nuts in the oven if you have time to preheat the oven! Also choose this method if you want to make more than one cup of toasted pine nuts.

  • Advantages : This method cooks the nuts more evenly than the stovetop method, and you can cook a lot of nuts at once.
  • Disadvantages: You have to wait for the oven to preheat: about 10 to 15 minutes!
  • Simple oven method (to the recipe): Preheat to 350 degrees and bake the nuts on a baking sheet until golden and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Again, do not remove them from the oven as they can burn easily.

Once you have these nicely toasted pine nuts (and your kitchen smells great), you’re ready to use them! Here’s how to save leftovers if you have any:

  • Let cool completely and place in an airtight container. We use a small glass container with a lid.
  • Store at room temperature for 1 week OR
  • Keep refrigerated for 2 months.
  • Freeze to extend shelf life even further, up to 6 months or more.

  • 1 cup pine nuts (or lots; for more than 1 cup use oven method)

  1. Stovetop method: Place the walnuts in a dry skillet (no oil) over medium-high heat. Heat, shaking the pan and stirring frequently with a wooden spoon, until the nuts are fragrant and golden brown, about 3 minutes. Stay close to the stove as the nuts can burn easily! Immediately remove from heat and transfer to a plate to stop cooking.
  2. baking method: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Place nuts in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake until fragrant and golden brown, about 5 minutes, stirring once. Don’t stray far from the oven as the nuts can go from roasted to burned quickly. Remove immediately and transfer to a plate to stop cooking.
  3. Use immediately. Or allow to cool completely and store in an airtight container at room temperature for 1 week and refrigerated for at least 2 months. (You can also extend the shelf life by freezing the nuts.)
