Roasted pecans

It does two things: it makes the nuts more crunchy and it improves their nutty flavor. Taste a roasted nut versus a raw nut and you can absolutely tell the difference! Roasted pecans are perfect for topping recipes of all kinds: soups, roasted vegetables, oatmeal, pancakes, and even dessert! It’s quick to prepare a batch: and you can craft them as needed. Here’s how to make Roasted Pecans: two ways!

Roasted pecans: over the fire

Make Stovetop Roasted Pecans when you have a small batch of nuts and want them ready quickly.

  • Advantages: This method is so quick: it only takes 5 minutes!
  • Disadvantages: Roasting nuts on the stovetop can cook them unevenly. You can also add just about 1 cup to a pan.
  • Basic cooking method (to the recipe): Place the walnuts in a dry pan (do not add oil!). Heat over medium-high heat until golden and fragrant, about 4-5 minutes. Do not leave the stove as the nuts can burn very easily. We know from experience!

How to roast pecans: in the oven

Make Oven Roasted Pecans when you have time to preheat the oven! This method also works for amounts of pecans larger than 1 cup.

  • Advantages : This method cooks the nuts more evenly than the stovetop method, and you can cook a lot of nuts at once.
  • Disadvantages: You have to wait for the oven to preheat: about 10 to 15 minutes!
  • Simple oven method (to the recipe): Preheat to 350 degrees and bake the nuts on a baking sheet until golden and fragrant, about 7-8 minutes. Again, do not remove them from the oven as they can burn easily.

You can taste the difference with toasted pecans! Heating the nuts makes them crunchier and enhances their nutty flavor. Here’s how to roast pecans: two ways.

  • 1 cup whole pecans or pecan chunks (or any amount; for more than 1 cup use oven method)

  1. Stovetop method: Place the walnuts in a dry skillet (no oil) over medium-high heat. Heat, shaking the pan and stirring frequently with a wooden spoon, until the nuts are fragrant and a slightly darker brown, about 4 to 5 minutes. Stay close to the stove as the nuts can burn easily! Immediately remove from heat and transfer to a plate to stop cooking.
  2. baking method: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Place nuts in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake until fragrant and slightly darkened, about 7 to 8 minutes, stirring once. Don’t stray far from the oven as the nuts can go from roasted to burned quickly. Remove immediately and transfer to a plate to stop cooking.
  3. Use immediately. Or allow to cool completely and store in an airtight container at room temperature for 1 week and refrigerated for at least 2 months. (You can also extend the shelf life by freezing the nuts.)
