How to toast coconut

Toasted Coconut is the way to take coconut flavor to the next level! Toasted coconut enhances its nutty flavor, giving it a nice golden brown and a satisfying crunch. You can taste the difference immediately! It’s perfect for topping smoothie bowls or oatmeal, pancakes, or even just over ice cream for an easy dessert. (Our favorite is tossing a handful in homemade nut butter.) You can use an oven or stovetop for this, and the same method works for crushed flakes or large flakes. How to roast coconut!

Grilled coconut: on the fire

Make stovetop toasted coconut if you have a small batch and want to make it quick.

  • Advantages: This method is so fast: it only takes 3 minutes!
  • Disadvantages: Roasting coconut on the stovetop can cook unevenly and it is more difficult to toast large batches.
  • Basic hotplate method (to the recipe): Put the coconut in a dry pan (do not add oil!). Heat over medium-high heat until golden and fragrant, about 3 minutes. Our biggest tip: do not remove from the heat as the coconut can burn very easily. We know from experience!

How to roast coconut: in the oven

Make Oven Roasted Coconut when you have time to preheat the oven! You can also grill large quantities at once.

  • Advantages : This method cooks the coconut more evenly than the griddle method, and you can cook many coconuts at once.
  • Disadvantages: You have to wait for the oven to preheat: about 10 to 15 minutes!
  • Simple oven method (to the recipe): Preheat to 350 degrees and bake the coconut on a baking sheet until golden and fragrant, about 4-5 minutes. Again, do not remove them from the oven as they can burn easily.

storage information

After you’ve made Roasted Coconuts (and your kitchen smells great), you’re ready to use them! Here’s how to save leftovers if you have any:

  • Let cool completely and place in an airtight container. We use a small glass container with a lid.
  • Store at room temperature for 1 month OR
  • Freeze to extend shelf life even further, up to 3 months or more. It stays perfectly crispy in the freezer, so we prefer this method! (We do the same with our Coconut Bacon.)

Toasted Coconut adds nutty flavor and crunchy crunch to oatmeal, smoothies, and desserts! Here’s how to toast coconut two ways.

  • 1 cup Coconut, grated or in large flakes (or any amount; for more than 1 cup use oven method)

  1. Stovetop method: Place the coconut in a dry frying pan (no oil) over medium-high heat. Heat, shaking the pan and stirring frequently with a wooden spoon, until coconut is fragrant and golden, about 3 minutes. Stay in the oven because the coconut can burn easily! Immediately remove from heat and transfer to a plate to stop cooking.
  2. baking method: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the coconut in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake until fragrant and golden brown, about 4 to 5 minutes, stirring once. Don’t stray far from the oven, as the coconut can go from toasted to burned quickly. Remove immediately and transfer to a plate to stop cooking.
  3. Use immediately. Or allow to cool completely and store in an airtight container at room temperature for 1 month and frozen for at least 3 months.
