Instructions for handling dry ice

Why ship cookies with dry ice? Instantly freezing the cookies with dry ice ensures they arrive at optimum freshness. They stay frozen for 24 hours, giving them enough time to be shipped overnight and arrive at their destination. This cookie shipping method requires a few special tools and a little know-how in handling dry ice. Here are some things to keep in mind when handling dry ice:

  • Buy the dry ice 1-2 hours before use. Dry ice doesn’t keep in the freezer or refrigerator, so you need to use it up as soon as possible.
  • Never put dry ice in airtight containers. When you bring it home, place the plastic bag of dry ice in a cooler with the lid open. Aeration is essential for dry ice because carbon dioxide is constantly being released as it “melts”. Do not store in a tightly closed container to minimize risk of explosion.
  • Always use gloves and tongs when handling dry ice. Do not touch dry ice with bare skin. It is extremely cold (-109.3°F or -78.5°C) and touching it can result in frostbite or burns.
  • Keep away from pets and children. Curious kids might try to touch the dry ice, so keep it out of sight until you’re ready to use it. Parental supervision is required for this task!
