Simple syrup is a sweetener commonly used in cocktail recipes and coffee drinks. Did you know you can do it at home? in just 5 minutes? All you need is sugar and water. Alex and I have become semi-professional mixologists here, with a long list of over 300 cocktails under our belts. How to make simple syrup
If you have sugar and 5 minutes you can make simple syrup! No skill is really required here, so let’s get down to business. It’s a formula you can memorize and repeat over and over again:
- Put equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan. In this recipe we used ½ cup sugar and ½ cup water.
- Heat over medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves. Resist the urge to simmer! All you want is to dissolve the sugar.
- Cool to room temperature. That’s it: you’re done! Cool to room temperature before use.
How much simple syrup is in 1 cup of sugar?
This is equivalent 1 ½ cups syrup. You would think that 1 cup of sugar plus 1 cup of water would equal 2 cups of syrup, right? But the chemistry of dissolving sugar makes the end product consistent ¾ volume added amounts of sugar and water.
How long does plain syrup keep?
Store in a covered container in the refrigerator. (We use a mason jar with a lid.) It lasts about 1 month.
Can other sugars be used in plain syrup?
You can! Using brown sugar results in a brown sugar syrup that works well in bourbon and whiskey drinks like our Whiskey Sour. You can also use natural sweeteners such as B. the production of a honey syrup.
Is there a naturally sweet simple syrup?
There’s… it’s pure maple syrup! Alex and I like to use maple as a sweetener in our cocktail recipes, rather than just syrup. In fact, we prefer it! It imparts a mild sweetness and adds a bit of flavor nuance, almost like adding an aroma or essence like bitters. Contrary to what you might think It doesn’t taste like maple. Be sure to use “pure” and not the copycat variety that uses artificial ingredients.
