How to make peanut butter

There are literally two steps to making one of my favorite dishes in the universe. How we hadn’t figured out this trick until now, I’m not sure! There are just a few things you should know about the process. How to make peanut butter at home:

  • Roast meat! This recipe calls for roasted peanuts… and you’ll be roasting them again! Why? Roasting nuts does two things: it brings out the flavor and helps them dissolve when mixed. Toast the nuts on a 325 degree baking sheet for about 10 minutes. This is important to get the right taste, so don’t skip this step!
  • Mixed! Turn on this food processor and blend for 4 minutes. You’ll see the nuts go from super crumbly to chunky to sticky and smooth. Add salt, scrape once, then process another 2 minutes. You’ll be surprised at how incredibly creamy it gets at this point!

Why Make a Homemade Peanut Butter Recipe?

If you’ve made it this far, you’re probably already convinced why homemade peanut butter is great (it is). But here are a few reasons you might not have thought of:

  • No added sugar AND creamy. Many of these brands of natural, sugar-free peanut butter require you to stir. Really, there’s nothing I hate more than stirring an impossibly dense saucepan and inevitably splashing oil all over me! (He really is my nemesis: ask Alex.) This PB is perfectly creamy with no added sugar.
  • No oils such as palm oil are added. Confession: My favorite brand of peanut butter has palm oil added. While Alex and I aren’t against added oils, palm oil is notoriously bad for the environment (here’s a long list of its effects). We feel better making our own homemade peanut butter recipe. No need for palm oil!
Peanut butter in the food processor

Just one piece of equipment for this DIY: a food processor

The only thing you need for this peanut butter recipe: a food processor! A food processor is a tool that we highly recommend if you enjoy cooking. Much more powerful than a blender, it’s the perfect tool for nut butters. We recommend choosing the large size, which is the most versatile. You can use it for everything from homemade hummus to basil pesto to veggie meatballs.
