How to crush garlic

Do you want to know how to crush garlic? Here we do it every day. In fact, we use garlic in more recipes than we can count! What makes this method different from hashing? How are you? Here’s a little more about the terminology and how to put it into practice in your kitchen.

What is pressed garlic?

There is some confusion in the terminology surrounding crushed garlic. This may be because a garlic press is also known as a garlic press, but the result is chopped garlic. Here’s what you should know about how terminology can be used in recipes:

  • Crushed garlic is the same as crushed garlic in some recipes. In this case, the garlic clove is used whole, then usually removed from the dish and later discarded. This will help create a subtle garlic flavor.
  • In other recipes, crushed garlic is the same as minced garlic. These recipes use garlic as a whole ingredient and you chop it the same way you would mince garlic. The recipe may refer to a garlic grinder.

At the end of the line: This terminology is not standardized and varies from country to country! Look at your recipe and try to guess if the author meant “shredded” or “chopped.” On this website these terms are used in all our recipes.

How to crush garlic

While it may seem intuitive, we don’t recommend using a garlic grinder. Also known as a garlic press, it’s not the best tool for the job. It makes very thin shreds that are spicier, resulting in a potentially irresistible flavor. It’s also difficult to clean and can be difficult to use. Garlic is best crushed with a chef’s knife! Here’s how:

  1. Cut off the end of the garlic clove. This makes it easy to peel after chopping.
  2. Use the blade of a knife or a glass to crush the cloves. Lay the blade of your knife flat on the garlic. Be careful of the sharp part of the blade and gently crush it with your fist or the heel of your hand. Or you can use the bottom of a jar or can of beans to mash the garlic.
  3. Remove the paper. Use your fingers to remove the paper around the clove.
  4. Chop at will: Then you can mince the garlic or use the crushed whole clove, whatever your recipe is (see definitions above).
