horseradish sauce

If you like spicy food, nothing beats the intense burn of horseradish. Here’s one way to harness that power in a spice to enrobe just about anything: this creamy one horseradish sauce Recipe! This delicious sauce combines sour cream, mayonnaise and a dash of Dijon and prepared horseradish vinegar. To say it’s irresistible is an understatement. It’s traditionally served with steak or prime rib, but use it to add flavor to just about anything: baked potatoes, roasted vegetables, grilled salmon, and more.

Ingredients for the horseradish sauce

Most creamy horseradish sauce recipes are based on sour cream. For this recipe, we combined sour cream with a little mayonnaise to add even more richness and flavor. (It’s a trick we use in many sauces and dressings, like Caesar dressing or avocado cream.) This results in a perfectly balanced sauce that’s deliciously creamy and great for drizzling over prime ribs and veggies. Here’s what you need:

  • prepared horseradish: see below!
  • sour cream
  • mayonnaise
  • Dijon mustard
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Chopped chives
  • salt and pepper

Go to the recipe below for the quantities! Just mix the ingredients in a bowl and you’re done! Chopped chives are optional but add a nice onion flavor and look like the sauce.

What is prepared horseradish?

You can use fresh horseradish root to make horseradish sauce, but why spend time grating when there’s pre-made horseradish? Here is the difference between the two:

  • horseradish is a spicy root vegetable from the same vegetable family as wasabi. It’s a cruciferous vegetable, just like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage. You can buy fresh horseradish in the produce section of the grocery store: it looks like a long brown root.
  • prepared horseradish is a condiment made from grated horseradish, vinegar and salt. This allows the horseradish to be processed immediately without grating. It’s sold in jars in the grocery store in the condiments section.

Prepared horseradish is so much easier to work with, and the flavor isn’t that different from using the grated root. It’s also milder than the fresh root, making it easier to control spice levels when adding it to recipes.
