Ketchup can be made with other ingredients, but tomato ketchup is by far the most popular (but did you know mushroom ketchup is a British thing?). Tomato ketchup was invented in the early 1800s, and the Heinz company began selling it nationwide in 1876. So, this hot spice has a long history before the 1950s when manufacturing made the mass-produced version available in all grocery stores.

The description

This homemade ketchup recipe tastes gourmet with little effort! How to make ketchup at home… with the best savory, tangy flavor.

  • 1 15 ounces of tomato sauce
  • 1 6 ounces of tomato paste
  • ¾ cup Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar, honey or maple syrup*
  • 1 teaspoon every Chili powder, onion powder and garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ⅛ teaspoon pimento
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (or arrowroot powder)
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika

  1. In a saucepan, combine tomato sauce, tomato paste, apple cider vinegar, white wine vinegar, sugar or honey, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika powder, allspice, and kosher salt. Simmer on low heat for 15 minutes.
  2. Remove from fire. Then use a spatula to squeeze the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or strainer into a clean container or measuring cup, which will give the texture a glossy finish. It will take a few minutes, but you can stop when most of the liquid has been squeezed out. There will be a large amount of thick paste left that you can throw away.
  3. Pour the ketchup back into the pot. In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with 2 teaspoons water and pour into the pan. Stir in the smoked paprika and simmer for another 10 minutes until the mixture thickens.
  4. Optional final step: To give the ketchup its perfect shine, press it through the sieve again (easier this time and only takes a minute or two). Refrigerate and store for up to 3 weeks.

Remarks

*Agave syrup or coconut blossom sugar also work if they are your favorite sweeteners.
