With Christmas just around the corner, we were in the mood to whip up some holiday treats. First on the to-do list is this easy peppermint bark recipe. It’s a breeze to put together as long as you have an hour or two. It’s a great treat for a Christmas party or as a gift, and it looks festive sitting on your counter… as long as it can stay that long! Read on for our easy peppermint bark recipe.

How to make peppermint bark

If you’ve never made peppermint bark before, you’re in for a treat (literally!). This easy peppermint bark recipe calls for four ingredients: two types of chocolate, some oil, and crushed candy canes or peppermint sticks. All you have to do is melt some semi-sweet chocolate, refrigerate until set, then top with melted white chocolate and crushed candy canes. When melting chocolate it is important to add a little vegetable oil so that the chocolate does not solidify as it melts. If you overcook chocolate, it can become lumpy instead of smooth and shiny. While it still tastes good, it won’t be pretty enough to serve to guests.

Another way to ensure the chocolate doesn’t stick is to melt it using a double boiler, which is basically a pan of hot water and another pan on top. If you don’t have a water bath, you can easily make your own. To do this, you need to fill a medium-sized saucepan with water and place it on the stove over medium-high heat. Next, place a heatproof bowl (glass or metal should work) over the pot of water. Add the chopped chocolate to the bowl and stir with a plastic spatula until melted. If you choose the double boiler method, be careful not to let the bowl touch the hot water (this could cause the chocolate to burn).

I hope you enjoy this easy peppermint bark recipe as much as we do! Combine different types of chocolate according to your preferences. If you’re not a fan of super-sweet desserts, you can always use dark chocolate and semi-sweet chocolate, or use a mixture of cacao nibs and crushed candy canes for the filling.
