We’ve unlocked the secret of making this creamy, frothy, and iconic drink at home, so you don’t need to go to Hogsmeade to have a Butterbeer.

Twenty years later, the renowned beverage has emerged from the pages of history and is now available to visitors at Universal Studios. Visitors to the park can enjoy the beverage in hot, cold, or frozen forms, but fear not if a trip to Universal isn’t in the near future! With this amazingly simple butterbeer recipe, you can create the bubbly beverage at home.

A Recipe for Homemade Cold Butterbeer

This recipe is for the cold form of butterbeer, which is, in my opinion, the simplest to prepare at home. The heated and frozen variants of butterbeer can also be created.

The beverage is divided into two components: a base of bubbling cream soda and a topping of sweetened whipped cream. Both the soda base and the topping, which we’ll discuss later, have a strong butterscotch flavour.

Purchasing butterscotch syrup from a retailer…

The butterscotch taste can be added in two different methods. One alternative is to prepare homemade butterscotch syrup, while the other is to utilise packaged butterscotch syrup.

You’ll be amazed to learn that making your own butterscotch syrup is easier than finding good packaged syrup!
If you wish to buy ready-made bottle, recommend Monin’s Butterscotch Syrup.

It is available online, but locally, you would often only find it from suppliers for commercial restaurants. You might be in luck if one is close by!

Start with this sauce from Simple Recipes if you want to make your own homemade butterscotch syrup. To prevent sugar from crystallising, I strongly advise adding 1/8 teaspoon of cream of tartar when you add the brown sugar to the pan and only heating the syrup to 250°F to obtain some liquid.

It is virtually solid right out of the refrigerator and gets thicker as it cools. As a result, I advise warming it up before use or, even better, utilising it immediately.

Warm the syrup up and combine it with a few teaspoons of cream soda in the bottom of a pint glass if it’s still too “saucey” and stiff. This ought to make it enough pliable to mix with the cream soda.

Simple advice

While the packaged syrup maintains the translucent quality of lemonade, using homemade syrup results in a “cloudy” beverage.

Whipping cream made of butterbeer

The whipped topping, which is equally important in this recipe as it makes the original drink densely stacked and extremely sweet, is another important element. For this recipe, I reduced the sweetness, but if you want to get the full experience, make sure to use more syrup!

I also recommend whipping your own cream. You can alter the sweetness and how thick or thin you want your whipped topping.

How to serve Butterbeer

A well-chilled 16-ounce pint glass fits into a full 12-ounce soda bottle, leaving room for a 1-inch layer of the whipped cream topping to be served. This dish can, however, be divided into two smaller 6-ounce servings, which can be served in double rocks glasses or tiny steins. Make room in the little jar for a centimetre of this cream topping as well!

Make sure all ingredients are very cold before serving this chilled drink without ice. You may even freeze the glasses while making the cocktail.

Please read the top remarks and use this Butterscotch Sauce recipe if you are creating the butterscotch syrup from scratch. Excess butterscotch whipping cream can be kept in the fridge for up to a day in an airtight container.
