Marguerite Hennessy

Do you love Hennessy and want to start something new with it? try it Hennessy Margarete! The combination of this noble cognac with aged tequila, lime and orange liqueur results in a very sophisticated drink. In fact, it tastes like a combination of a classic sidecar and a margarita! Both classics contain citrus, cognac and cointreau: for a full-bodied, nuanced sip. Here’s how to prepare this delicious drink!

What’s in a Hennessy Margarita?

The Hennessy Margarita is a classic margarita with the addition of cognac. Invented in Mexico in the 1930s, the classic margarita is one of the most popular cocktails ever invented. The International Bartender Association’s official IBA cocktails define it with just 3 ingredients: tequila, triple sec and lime juice. The Hennessy Margarita simply adds cognac! Here’s what you need:

Let’s talk about some of the ingredients, shall we?

Why Use Tequila Reposado? Can you use Blanco?

What is the best tequila for margaritas? Well, it really depends on the drink! We like to use Tequila Reposado for the Hennessy Margarita. Why?

  • Tequila Reposado goes best with Hennessy. It is aged in oak barrels for 2 to 12 months (rests means “rested” in Spanish). It has a smooth taste and hints of oak, vanilla and caramel that go well with cognac.
  • Tequila Blanco works too. This type of tequila is not aged. The taste is agave, with hints of pepper and citrus and a spicy finish. It also works in a Hennessy Margarita if you prefer or that’s all you have.

All about Hennessy

Hennessy, what is that exactly? Hennessy is a type of cognac, an eau-de-vie made in Cognac, France. Hennessy was founded in France over 250 years ago in 1765. Today it produces 40% of the world’s cognac, making it the largest cognac producer in the world.

How does Hennessy taste? It has a powerful flavor with notes of hazelnut, fruit, oak, vanilla and spices. It is very complex and makes a margarita like no other that you will taste!

Use of Cointreau against Triple Sec

What’s the best triple sec for a margarita? Again, it depends on the drink! In this Hennessy Margarita, the nuanced notes of cognac and tequila reposado pair best with Cointreau. Cointreau is an orange liqueur that’s actually considered a kind of triple sec (how confusing is that?).

  • Cointreau tastes best in a Hennessy Margarita. It’s usually our favorite in a margarita: it has a smooth flavor with warm spices and undertones that harmonize with the sophisticated vibe here.
  • triple sec has a crunchy citrus flavor that goes well with orange margarita. Find a quality triple sec brand, not the cheapest on the block. We love Drillauds.

More Hennessy cocktails: the sidecar and more!

The Hennessy Margarita looks like a Classic Sidecar, the most classic cognac cocktail. The sidecar includes cognac, lemon juice and Cointreau orange liqueur. So the main difference between the Hennessy Margarita is that it uses lime juice and tequila. If you haven’t tried a sidecar before, this is a must! Here are some other Hennessy drinks we recommend:
