Use whatever milk you like

You can use any type of milk you prefer for this recipe! Here are some things to keep in mind about dairy and non-dairy products:

  • Our favorite milk is 2% milk and our favorite milk is oat milk. You can also use other vegan milks like almond milk, soy milk, or coconut milk. We find that oat milk comes closest in texture and flavor to cow’s milk.
  • 2% milk contains 137 calories and 9.7 grams of protein in 1 cup (source).
  • oat milk has 120 calories and 3 grams of protein in 1 cup (source). Interestingly, there isn’t a huge calorie difference between the two. If you are interested in protein, milk has 2% more.

Adjust the sweetness to your taste

The benefit of healthy homemade hot chocolate? You can adjust the sweetness to your liking. Here’s what you need to know about the sweetness level of this recipe:

  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey makes a slightly sweet drink. We prefer ours a little sweeter, but that’s the lowest you can do.
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup or honey has a little more of the hot chocolate flavor you would expect (without the chocolate). 1 tablespoon of maple syrup has 52 calories and 1 tablespoon of honey has 64 calories, which is about 25-30 extra calories per serving.
  • Other natural sweeteners you can use? Agave syrup (or nectar) also works. We haven’t experimented with monk fruit sweetener, but that should work in the same amounts as well.
