Roasted Brussels sprouts

Who would have thought you could roast Brussels sprouts? You probably did, but we don’t know how we went so long without this tip! Mighty Brussels sprouts are a popular vegetable around here, and our Crunchy Brussels Sprouts are a fan favorite. But make room in your heart for these Roasted Brussels sprouts! They are tender and blackened, with a hint of smoky flavor. Mix them with a balsamic sauce, they’re really delicious! They are easy to prepare as a side dish for a grilled dinner.

Ingredients for Roasted Brussels Sprouts

Roasted Brussels Sprouts just need a little spice to come alive! These sprouts turn out to be a cross between crispy roasted and steamed Brussels sprouts. As the texture may seem a bit dry, they’re perfect dipped in a simple balsamic sauce. Here are the ingredients you will need:

  • Cauliflower
  • olive oil
  • Salt
  • balsamic vinegar
  • honey or maple syrup

How to Roast Brussels Sprouts: In a Grill Basket

For roasted Brussels sprouts you will need a grill basket or aluminum foil (see below). Why? Brussels sprouts are pretty small, so if you throw them on the grill, they’ll fall through the grates. A grill basket holds all the vegetables together and heats them evenly. Here are some preparation tips (or jump straight to the recipe):

  • To preheat the grill basket: Be sure to preheat the grill basket on the grill!
  • Slice and season: Halve the Brussels sprouts. Brush with olive oil and season with salt.
  • Grill for about 12 to 16 minutesuntil vegetables are charred and tender. Stir them several times to ensure even cooking.
  • Mix with the balsamic sauce! Since the Brussels can easily come out dry, the sauce gives it the perfect consistency.

Otherwise use aluminum foil!

Don’t have a grill basket? No problem. You can make a makeshift grill basket out of aluminum foil! Here’s what to do:

  • Fold a large piece of aluminum foil in half and poke several holes in it with a fork.
  • Fold a 1 inch strip around the edge to make a makeshift tray. It’s not mandatory, but it makes sense to keep all the veggies in the bowl. Then you can use it like a grill basket!

Add a little heat if you like!

Balsamic sauce for tossing Brussels sprouts is made easily with balsamic vinegar and honey. It imparts the flavors of the perfect sweet tart. If you like spicy food, here’s the place to add heat: add about 1 teaspoon of hot sauce to the balsamic sauce. It adds just the right amount of complexity. You can then drizzle with hot sauce if you like. (This method is similar to our Spicy Brussels Sprouts.)

The benefit of roasted Brussels sprouts is that they don’t take up too much space in the grill basket. This leaves plenty of room for a main course! Here are some great ideas to try:

The description

This is how easy it is to prepare Roasted Brussels Sprouts! Grilling them makes them black and smoky; Mix with balsamic sauce and they are perfect.

  • 1 1/2 pound Brussels sprouts
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup

  1. Preheat a grill to medium-high heat (375 to 450 degrees). If you are using the grill basket, place it on the grill while it is preheating. Or fold a large piece of aluminum foil in half and poke several holes in it with a fork, then fold a 1-inch border around the edge to make a makeshift tray.
  2. If necessary, trim the tough ends of the Brussels sprouts. Cut them in half lengthwise and place in a large bowl. Mix with olive oil and kosher salt.
  3. Grill in the grill basket or aluminum sheet until tender, 12 to 16 minutes, turning the vegetables a few times to ensure even cooking.
  4. Mix the balsamic vinegar and honey or maple syrup. When the Brussels sprouts are cooked, mix them with the sauce. Add a few pinches of salt (as it tends to fall out when grilling) to taste. Serve immediately.
